Eden Terra Nova amps...Any Reports?

I recently grabbed a TN501 on closeout from Thomann, and the next day the Eden website was offline! Note if you're in North America and purchasing from Europe, you have to open it up and switch the voltage. A simple process, but the 16 screws that @Matthijs mentioned were indeed quite annoying! I wish I had the foresight to disconnect the Eden logo light while I was in there - it's a bit tacky for my taste.

So far so good in rehearsal, and its maiden voyage at a show will be next Friday. It sounds a lot fuller than my WT550, which was surprising. But my WT550 is in rough shape, so it wouldn't surprise me if something was affecting the sound.

I’m rooting for Yamaha. Or is Mesa also active in the brand takeover business?

Yamaha recently bought Ampeg, so acquiring another bass brand seems doubtful imo. If we're going for big names, I'd vote Korg - they own Vox but don't have any bass amp offerings. For a curveball, I would be surprised but not surprised to see Warwick purchase them - their amps have been good but never really got much market penetration, and Warwick basses through Eden amps are an iconic combo.
(I have no inside info, these are guesses which I'm assuming will be completely wrong :).)

Warwick and Eden could be a good combination. I have an LWA 500 that's really fantastic in a lot of ways, except the compressor crapped out. Seems like the compressor pot has a bad connection to the board, which seems perhaps emblematic of the construction quality/QA of the amp. Of the few TBers who bought the LWA500, many had complaints. Again, I love mine, and the compressor was actually great once you figured out how to use it; but it was unconventional. The LWA1000, OTOH, has a decent little fan base on TB and elsewhere.

I would love to see an updated version of the LWA heads with a parametric EQ. The basic design concept does seem similar to some of the Eden heads. Interestingly enough, the LWA500 went on sale at Thomann (it was super cheap, ~$200) around the same time as the Tera Nova heads. Coincidence?

Did anyone ever figure out who made them for Warwick? EBS? Marshal?
I remember seeing the LWA1000 and thinking it looked a lot like my dad's old 8-Track player, but with more knobs and no cartridge slot... ;-)
 
I brought my TN501 to an outdoor gig last sunday. Right at startup it made a weird intermittent chirping sound and nothing else. It worked without any problems before and also when I returned home it worked perfectly. Luckily I had my little BAM200 as a backup and the sound was mainly FOH anyway.
Still, I’m a bit worried. Could this have been a vulnerability for some kind of power problem? That’s the only thing I can think of right now.
 
Setup and cables as usual?
Anything else plugged in?
Disconnected for a test what ever was plugged in additionally?

I found out the common factor was the cab. I use that cab for gigs and I don’t keep it in house. So it took me some time to elliminate all other factors.

It is a 2*12 cab I built myself with two deltalites in it. It is also my only 4ohm cab. That is also where I think the problem lies. The cab is functioning perfectly. As it has for over 10 years. It has been gigging with a wt300 for a long time and still works with that amp and with a BAM200 at full power. Only the TN501 starts shrieking when it is connected to this cab. Sometimes it works just fine for a minute or so, but never any longer. My best guess is this is some kind of low impedance failsafe. The deltalites do have an area around 200 hz where the impedance drops to just over 5hz. So that may be what’s causing this? It never ever was a problem with other amps though.
 
I had thought of capacative load too, but can’t think of a way that load would still be in the circuit.

Still the amp does not really sound like it is in a protective mode with some sort of sound signal. It does a loud ‘chirp, chirp, chirp’, not some kind of polite beep. I’d think what it does fits closer to a capacative load problem.

Maybe i should open the cab up. I built this thing a long time ago, so maybe there’s something going on I’m not aware of. I was trying to avoid this as it is at the rehearsal space and I want to avoid having to transport it as I already have to take the DB to those rehearsals. Also if something was still in the circuit I’d think I should have heard it in the last ten years
 
It is the crossover!

I had some time on my hands and decided to pick the cab up and open it up. When the mid is switched off the crossover is not fully out of the circuit. With just the two 12’s connected the terra nova does just fine. I’m not sure what I was thinking when I fitted that switch, but it also does not seem to have had a big audible effect.

The problem now still remains with the crossed over setting. As it is at a fairly low crossover frequency of 1400 hz the cap values are significant. I might try to lower the lpf filter to 6db? That will remove one cap out of the system. Is there any other way besides experimenting to determine what the amp can handle?
 
This is a common problem with incorrectly designed or assembled crossovers, and one reason some amps have this protection. I have seen this problem often enough to recognize that many folks do not appreciate what's happening reactively within the crossover from the amp's perspective, and it's even more common on DIY audiophile forums where reinventing the wheel without appreciating why wheels are round in the first place seems acceptable.

Can you post a schematic of the crossover?

This is the schematic as far as I can piece together now. I put it together over ten years ago. It is based on the two deltalites 2512 ii having an impedance of 4 ohms and the faital 5mn8-80 at 7.5 ohms at the crossover frequency.

I am an amateur at this, but try to do my research. This cab has been working with this crossover for a long time, and to my ears it worked ok. The point was to crossover beneath the 2 kHz bump of the deltalites and create a flat response, usable for DB at loud volumes.
