Eden WT400 repair/mod

As for the Speakon, you will need to remove the power supply board and Toriod transformer. You can probably get away with just unmounting the components and moving them aside. The transformer has a carriage style mounting bolt. You can loosen and remove the nut and transformer mount without having to hold the bolt at the bottom of the chassis. Mine has a nice Eden sticker over the bolt head, I'll post a picture later.

I lucked out and have a friend that has a Green Lee panel punch assortment I can borrow. This 0.937 is almost perfect! View attachment 4053968

I chose to retain one of the 1/4" jacks, because you never know if you might need it. The center bolt fit right in the lower jack hole. View attachment 4053969 View attachment 4053970

Theres a poly coupling cap that's soldered to one of the jacks and is held against the chassis. Make sure you move that to the upper jack. Heatshrink may have been a good idea here as well. View attachment 4053973

I wanted to have it rear mounted so it was nice and flush on the rear panel, but a standard Speakon was not long enough to seat fully. I could buy the longer version, but I would be in a bind if I forgot my cable.

I opted to have the front mounted. The flange also covers the Amp Out text that was cu . I know this is a little crooked, I need to loosen the bottom nut and straighten it. View attachment 4053977

I'll mention the internal connection to the power supply board in my next post.

Also note this is a 4 pole Speakon connector, I wired it as
+1 Positive to top cabinet +1
-1 Negative to top cabinet -1
+2 Positive to bottom cabinet +1
-2 Negative to bottom cabinet -1

I built my own cable so the top cabinet runs off of '1' and the lower cabinet runs off of '2'. Sure, I could use two off the shelf 3' cables and use the link on the speaker, but this way I have less wire and fewer connections sharing current. View attachment 4053978 View attachment 4053979
Something funny seeing a box wrench being used on sensitive electronic components. I wouldn't expect such a tool to be used, ie saw, hammer etc. but if it works .. ;)

That's not an IDC problem, because there are plenty of amps where IDC connectors are used with no problems over decades of use.
It seems that it's not an issue with IDC connectors in general, but the IDCs specifically used in the Eden amps. I've seen them plenty of times in other amps and other equipment (I dealt with Samtec IDCs today at my current job) and haven't had an issue.
I'm speculating it was a tooling issue....

That's been my experience manufacturing products with IDC connectors too. As with everything, it takes additional attention to detail when using any technology.

@AudioTaper, thanks a bunch for this thread and your maintenance suggestions. Do these apply to the WT550 as well, or do you have any specific advice there? My WTs have never given me trouble so I haven't had them open to look.
Don't be like me. If it 'ain't broke, dont 'fix' it.
The early run of WT550s had issues with the low voltage supply, but it seemed to be a parts issue not a design issue. They did away with the big resistors and had regulators which were flaky. Direct replacement parts did the trick on the dozen or so I saw go through the shop. (Thanks goes to Eden tech support for that one. I just worked the tools) The later runs didn't seem to have any issues - so if your's works, don't mess with it.
 
I wonder if my 400 needs the 1st solution. This is how it manifests. Sometimes it just shuts off. I have learned to tap it on the top right and it pops back on almost all the time.
There was one time when I was running 2 cabs off of it and it shut off and it took about 20 seconds to actually get it to come back.
Most of the time it was just 'tap' and back it came.

The thing is ... I have used it as only a preamp with no speakers connected and it has manifested this problem.
Thoughts?

It could be a variety of things. One of which could be a poor soldier joint on the preamp dropping resisters. If you're comfortable with opening up an amp you can simply take a look inside for signs of heat. While you're in there make sure all the connectors are seated properly. That's all you can do without having a better understanding of electronics and some tools to troubleshoot the issue.
