Eden WTDI Direct Box/Preamp

The compressor is useful but not for a peak limiter. Mine's generally turned up past 2 o'clock.

I cut the bass, engage the bass boost and only (if ever) use a very small amount of enhance. At times I roll off a couple of dB of treble and often bump the mids.

tonynoriega: don't skimp on learning your gear for yourself. This one's pretty simple.

Newbold ~ thanks for the head's up. I do plan on putting this thing through it's paces and mostly wanted to get a jump on the learning curve. Your input is very useful! Thanks ~ Tony

Hey Thanks a lot! I used my Suhr Classic J which has two split coil Suhr pickups he calls "Humpreys." The strings were D'Addario XL-165s (.45-.105) and if I was using the 9-V pre, I had the tone controls set flat (the preamp is factory set to be the same volume as passive mode). I went into the Eden, Radial JD48 DI, Presonus MP20 mic pre (has no EQ), to sound card using Ableton Live (no processing).

Just curious why you used the J48 when the Eden has a DI?

I just got mine today - bought on a whim...

I played it through headphones and I quite like it, especially for the money. Huge bottom end if desired. Tone controls work well, but noisy when boosting treble. I don't boost treble much, so it's not an issue and might not be as noticeable through a live rig anyway.

The compressor works fairly transparently unless you smack it pretty hard, and the enhance knob is just about the only knob labelled "Enhance" that I would ever turn up.

There are some things I kinda don't like about it.

-the blue LED is stupidly bright. Like seeing spots when you look away from it bright. Gaff tape fixed it. If I keep it I'll probably Sharpie over it. I do like that it has a power indicator, though.

-I don't mind the 12-18V power, but why center POSITIVE? at least you can run it with either AC or DC, but come on. Also, there is no indication of polarity on the unit itself so hope your memory's good. I feel for the poor souls down the road who buy them used if the PS is missing.

-slightly distorted sounds are pretty ugly to me - no tubiness at all. as you hold the note and it decays, the distortion component drops out suddenly rather than diminishing gradually. Useless for dirt, for me anyway.

I don't mean distortion in the typical FX context. I found that any setting of the gain knob above about 9:00 to start getting ugly on peaks. This is with EQ zeroed out on the WTDI and on the Stingray I was playing.

I prefer that anything in the signal path either have plenty of headroom OR transition fairly gracefully in and out of "the dirt zone".

You might be overdriving your bass head's preamp with a combination of the Stingray's and WTDI's output. I can turn the gain and master all the way up on the WTDI and not clip the preamp (or for that matter hear any difference in sound) but that's because I have passive medium output pickups and I adjust the gain on the amp so that it doesn't clip. I don't think the gain function was designed to provide any "grit" inside the box.

I was using it straight into a mixer via 1/4" and listening through headphones. It was definitely happening at the 1st gain stage of the WTDI.

A Stingray with eq on the detents isn't all that hot. I'll have to play around with it and see if I'm mistaken, though. It happens...

Why does the low eq control 30Hz? 99% of speakers can't handle such a low frequency. 50-80Hz would be more useful.

So you can turn DOWN the ultra lows.

This thing is great to get a more natural 'instrument' tone than a heavy amp sound. It has its own colour but is a great tone shaper.

I can go from classic electric sounds on my amp to modern hifi with this at the step of a foot.

U cut bass and hit the boost. It brings out the 'fundamentals' and attack of my notes a lot more than I had expected.

Sort of like an 'I can't believe my bass sounds like this' kind of 'whathafah' style reaction.

me likey.
