Effects you hate

i haven't honestly found a flanger that i like on bass. that being said, if you biamp live or mix two or three or four bass sounds in the studio and one of those sounds is flanged... then it can be cool.

to sum up: i like all effects with bass, as long as they're used correctly so that the bassline and Groove don't suffer.

that being said, if it's noize or experimental, or some other type of music where the Groove won't necessarily suffer from lack of a Solid Bassline, then i love everything that makes a sound.

to really sum up: I Love Effects.

Bass wahs. Guitar wahs on bass are fine though. I LOVE effects, I just got back from my friend's house where I finally recorded somethign using my distortion/fifths harmonizer(adds a fifth up to whatever your playing) setting on my multifx unit.

The only thing that annoys me is those autowahs that say "words" or "vowels" of sorts it's just so fake.

Yeah, my old Boss autowah pedal had a mode that did that. Talk about a gimmicky sound that you'd never use more than once, ever. If at all. ;)

Aside from that, I don't really hate any effect. I see lots of reverb hate here, but reverb on a fretless bass in a sparse arrangement can be very nice and atmospheric and sets a certain mood.

I must be by myself on this one because some one would have said it by now. I can't stand distortion on bass, maybe I just have yet to here it used in the right place, but from what I have heard it ruins the bass part. I feel like most guitarist use it because the big sound hides imperfections and off of pitch notes, the bass needs to be clean to clearly set the chord structure, rhythm, or the feel of the song.

sorry :hiding:

i love reverb and wah on guitar.

overdrive, chorus, phase, and occasional flange sound awesome on each. something about reverb (i'd say i haven't figured out what sounds good on bass yet) just doesn't feel right to me.

I agree with you, actually. Reverb on bass does often seem a bit odd... which is why I went with chorus instead for a deep alternative to something that, IMO, works best on those six-string "treblemakers" :D

It's kinda interesting how some of the most hated effects in this forum are the ones I use. I like my ODB-3, and I use a reverb(due to my No Wave influence)....

and I kinda like this situation :D :bassist:

I'm with you. My band's motto is "we hope you don't like it!" So I lurves me some cheesy 'ol Boss rack modeler/multi-EFX action.

If I have to hate on something, how about frets? Link Removed

You don't listen to much hard rock/metal, do you ;)

Try listening to some Rage Against The Machine to get a good appreciation of what distortion can do for bass.

As for effects I don't like on bass... I honestly can't say I'm a huge fan of chorus. Not that I hate it so much, but I don't really dig it as much as a most other effects. (Strangely though, flange is one of my favorites...)

I depends on how it's used. Check out the intro to the tool song 'H' if you want to hear a good bass distortion osund, used effectively. Distortion on bass is (usually) not good to use through an entire song but it does wonders in the right situations.
