Unfortunately (if you're selling) or fortunately (if you're buying), there are some great handmade basses to be had on the used market for around $2,000. One example of many is the Alembic Essence. A new one starts at over $7,000 (and you can spend a lot more if you option it up), but they can be found on the used market in great condition for around $2,000.
I am a huge fan of Elias basses, but I think the low production volume (my best guess is less than 200) is keeping the price down. They are pretty much unknown to anyone who doesn't have one, so there's no demand driving the price up.
