^ I think I may have talked with that fellow a few months back and let him know about the registry. He must have it up for sale again. He did not have a price listed before.

There was another one for sale in Calgary a few months ago. #145, I believe. Also a dual pickup (AP-2?)
ah yes... it was #145.... that was a single P model I believe.
Is this one a PJ? It sure looks like dual pickups. that photo is so small.

I live in Edmonton and I'm looking to sell my Elias bass. It's # 152 of the AP -2 model. It has three knobs and P + J active EMG pickups. It was roughly appraised at being valued at 1600 to 2000$. If interested I can be reached at [email protected]
Who did the appraisal? That appraisal is much too low for the quality of these basses.
I wouldn't sell mine for twice that amount. And I know it couldn't be replaced with anything comparable for less than $4000.

The appraisal was done by a fellow who used to own Mother's Music, a guitar shop here in Edmonton. Mother's carried these basses, I believe in the early 70's, as Peter Elias was working out of Edm for some time. From what I hear, Mr. Elias had to stop making basses using cherry wood due to serious allergies to the dust. So then came the Padouk wood.
I am familiar with his store. I was in his shop once in 1987, when the band I played with was working in Edmonton for a few weeks. I saw an AP-1 on the wall with a price tag of $4000. and I mentioned to the guys in the band I'll have to up my insurance value on my Elias. It was the first time I had seen another Elias bass since I bought mine.
My AP-1 (#99) was bought new in 1983 for $1500. That would be about $3400. in today's money. Unless the bass was abused, it should have lost little value. Probably should have gained some value, due to the low numbers made, and quality.
It would cost at least $4000. today, if it had to be replaced... IMHO of course. So I must have a different definition of value. I say though, I'd sure like to know where to get a handemade bass of that quality for $1600 - 2000. for future reference.

Unfortunately (if you're selling) or fortunately (if you're buying), there are some great handmade basses to be had on the used market for around $2,000. One example of many is the Alembic Essence. A new one starts at over $7,000 (and you can spend a lot more if you option it up), but they can be found on the used market in great condition for around $2,000.
I am a huge fan of Elias basses, but I think the low production volume (my best guess is less than 200) is keeping the price down. They are pretty much unknown to anyone who doesn't have one, so there's no demand driving the price up.

I just found out that Elias #026 is still for sale in Vancouver. If anyone is interested, give me a shout and I can put you in touch with the seller. This was offered for sale a year and a half ago for $1,500. Not sure what the current asking price is, but probably a bit lower.
Lined fretless, jazz style, rosewood fingerboard, birdseye maple neck. Unsure about the body wood... Koa? Walnut?

That's walnut. Peter charged a little less for these (with the one piece birdseye neck) than the multi-lam koa ones. Thing of beauty!
Just a little plug... if you haven't had a look at the Elias Bass Registry in a while, check it out... there are now twenty basses listed; most with pictures.

Just noticed that Elias #117 (AP-1 with added neck pickup?) popped up for sale again in Edmonton on Link Removed. $2,000 with flight case.
