EMG Club!

Do the EMP P5s sound the same as the P4 on the EADG? In the trad 2 piece P shape not the 35/40 versions. Specs look identical, but I'm curious.
Thanks.

I think so. With the usual caveat that the same pickup can sound different from bass to bass.

Thinking of modding a cheap ibanez GAXB150 with either EMG HZ40 or DC40. Never done something like this and have a few questions. Bass currently is passive but has rear control cavity. If I went with the DC40s, I'd have to take the whole back plate off to change the battery, but I don't think that should be that big of a deal. I know the DC is designed for 5 string basses, but it matches the dimensions of the stock large soapbar pickup. Is the active DC40 significantly punchier than the passive HZ series? Can I run the DC without a pre-amp--i.e. just swap out the stock pickup and pots?

I miss understood you. You want to see if the DC needs a preamp and you can use the prebuilt in hardware. I do not think so but some say it can be done. I think the EMG have preamps in the pickup themselves and they need to be powered (I can't find the source). Here is a thread about it. It talks about using with out preamp.

Preamps for active EMG's

The links in my previous post was showing that if you need to install a preamp, you could install a rechargable battery this in control cavity. You just need to drill a hole in the control plate you can plug in to charge the battery. This eliminates the need for removing the control panel

I put the J at the neck, the P in the middle, and the DC (well okay it’s really a CS, but I might try swapping in a DC) at the bridge. That way the loudest pickup is at the lowest natural string excursion (amplitude), and vice versa.

I've got these old school EMG actives in my Tagima TW-73 budget J-Bass. They're so complimentary to a clear and assertive sounding J.
