EMG Club!

Greetings. I am trying to install EMG 40DCX pickups in an old Spector Euro 5-string. It's already routed for EMGs and previously had 40DCs, however, I'm unable to re-use the old connectors which were soldered on the preamp side. So, my question is how can I enlarge the pickup wire holes so I can fit the two quick-connectors through? BTW, I can fit the smaller red connector through the hole, but not the black one. Any thoughts on this? I cannot solder, so clipping the ends and just soldering later is not an option.

I don’t understand why you can’t re-use the old connectors. If they’re solderless, they should connect just fine.

Same thought here. Unless you wanna include a blend pot, you can easily reuse them. Do you want to change anything else beside the pickups?

I tossed the old preamp. The new one I am looking to install (a Spector 18v HAZ) already has EMG connectors. The entire electronics system, including the Jack, is plug-and-play. I just need to get the bloody EMG connectors trough the wire holes. :D

Ah, okay.

The usual way is to use a looooong drill bit and drill at the shallowest angle possible. Since you just want to make the existing hole larger, you should be able to just use a larger bit and follow that hole. Make sure the control cavity is empty first!

Hello,

I have done multiple searches and my head is spinning so I thought I would take this right to the EMG thread.

I just picked up a Spector NS PulseII with EMG 40DC's and a Tone Pump Jr preamp. First things first, I despise the preamp. It is the loudest signal I have ever ran across and the first thing I did was open up the cavity looking for a trim control. No such luck..

I ordered a EMG BQC preamp over the weekend and as a result of googling, a 40PX-5 for the neck position. Not sure why I picked up the P pickup but i am intriged and cant wait to check this setup out.

Will the 40DC be ok in the bridge position with this preamp and the P soapbar in the neck position?

Once i get this pre installed pickup swaps will be super easy. Lol. which is not good in a way, knowing myself... I may just collect them all!

If you're like me you will want another 40PX5 in the Bridge position, connected to the BQC, it will blow you away.
That's all I have to say.

Oh my. I just looked into that. At first i thought the treble side would be way too close to the bridge then I realized its a reverse P!

The preamp and pickup have shipped from EMG. (Lord willing I get this installed correctly.) I am going with the DC in the bridge this week but thanks to you there will be no way to get this out of my head! And EMG makes it super easy to swap. Bastages.

I also have a Spector Euro with the regular Tonepump and barts. Never disliked the sound of this bass but it actually never really wowed me either. If i like what the EMG's do in the PulseII I may go down the EMG rabbit hole with that bass as well.

*Looks around for gear to sell....

DC in the bridge, I Like it!

My favourite pickup combos in a Spector are P/J and P/P, but P/DC have lots of fans

Thank you. So many possibilities and changing the pickups out is easy. Loosen the strings, take out two screws and change the 40 size pickup. no problem. (i have read that another popular combo is the CS in the neck and DC bridge.)

Anyway. The J in the bridge position with the P is definitely something to try... Now i read one can get a reverse J where the bar is further from the bridge. Now im questioning that why couldnt this be tried with the normal J pickup, just put it in upside down? the logo would be upside down but one could see what the difference would be?

I swapped the P5x pickup in the Spector with the tonepump and it sounds really different. Changed the whole tone. This is crazy. Lord willing i can get this preamp installed today.

In the past, many have done that. Although the OCD of people on the internet would lead you to believe a lot of people don't want to see the logo upside-down. I believe Stu Hamm recently flipped both of his EMG pickups on his daily driver to get a sound he wanted out of them.

Hey, search this thread, and I couldn’t find an answer to my question which could be user error. That being said, any experiences, comparing and contrasting 35DCX versus 35P4x soapbars?

I have a Spector NS2 4 string with
EMG - 35DCX pickups and Spector HAZ 18v Pre-Amp and want to get a more scooped modern hi-fi slap tone.

The P will have a more mid-forward tone than the DC. The DC has the more modern tone. I hesitate to use the word “scooped”, as the DC has plenty of mids, but it has so much of everything that it sounds scooped when compared to the P.

Hi, didn't knew this club existed until today...

I really love passive EMGs, have used them in some of my past Ibanez, Peavey and Lakland basses. Actually I have a Geezer Butler set on my Fender Player P that sounds massive, planning to add a 40HZ at the bridge to make it a P/H bass...

Hi - I’m planning my next 5 string build and am looking at a 40 sized pickup for it. I have a BQC here, and would like a great “all around” pickup. I’ll be running a single pickup in it. I prefer more vintage type tones, though I have a p bass with the EMG alnico p pickup that I like a lot. That said, I’m thinking maybe a 40PX-5 might be a decent choice.

I’m definitely open to suggestions…

I would not call that pickup 'vintage sound' , I have two in bridge & neck positions & is punchy & grindy,
I LOVE IT better than vintage.

Figured I would hop in here instead of starting a new thread.

I bought a Franken PJ off eBay in 2012 - 1996 MIA 62 P body that the previous owner "upgraded" with a relic job, routing in a J slot and adding SD Basslines + a 1989 MIJ P neck.

I have never liked the sound of the J pickup or of the tone knob anywhere other than off. After 11.5 years I'm considering swapping the pickups for something else. I currently have it strung with flats and use it as a Motown / soul / funk machine but would be happy to use it in rock or any applicable style. After some research I'm considering the EMG Geezer PJ set for both tone and ease of installation. Would this be a mistake? What would you suggest instead? Thanks!

Hey Fellow EMG buddies!!! I have been a devotee for a couple years now, I have them in everything. My faves are the DC for soaps and the Original P and J. I use the BTC pre in all my basses and with the dip switches set On/On so it’s more of an upper mid boost than treble. It’s my dream set up!!! I have used bloody everything on my road to this. Ironically on of my first pro basses was the GnL L5500 5 string that came stock with this exact set up. I recently switched out my endorsement from Ibanez to G n L and I dropped my fave EMG pick ups in all of them. Check out my modded L2500 Fullerton USA (my own L5500) tribute in this demo for the new KHDK Electronics Totality Drive✌️
Peace out, and let me know what you think of my EMG DC tone
