Figured I would hop in here instead of starting a new thread.

I bought a Franken PJ off eBay in 2012 - 1996 MIA 62 P body that the previous owner "upgraded" with a relic job, routing in a J slot and adding SD Basslines + a 1989 MIJ P neck.

I have never liked the sound of the J pickup or of the tone knob anywhere other than off. After 11.5 years I'm considering swapping the pickups for something else. I currently have it strung with flats and use it as a Motown / soul / funk machine but would be happy to use it in rock or any applicable style. After some research I'm considering the EMG Geezer PJ set for both tone and ease of installation. Would this be a mistake? What would you suggest instead? Thanks!

How many control knobs do you have? I have loved upgrading the electronics for my EMG with the BQC preamp and it really does make a huge difference. Besides dialing in the sound, the balance knob is great in blending the P and J.

Yeah man, a blend is a must for me on PJ pups, and I always have the stacked treble and bass. So all basses have Vol/blend/stacked EQ. Except the single pickup basses that have just vol/stacked eq

Hey Fellow EMG buddies!!! I have been a devotee for a couple years now, I have them in everything. My faves are the DC for soaps and the Original P and J. I use the BTC pre in all my basses and with the dip switches set On/On so it’s more of an upper mid boost than treble. It’s my dream set up!!! I have used bloody everything on my road to this. Ironically on of my first pro basses was the GnL L5500 5 string that came stock with this exact set up. I recently switched out my endorsement from Ibanez to G n L and I dropped my fave EMG pick ups in all of them. Check out my modded L2500 Fullerton USA (my own L5500) tribute in this demo for the new KHDK Electronics Totality Drive✌️
Peace out, and let me know what you think of my EMG DC tone

The Geezer P is wound in such a way that it's a 'classic' P tone. Much like the Duncan SPB1, Fender 62, etc... It will provide what 80% of P players (and P listeners) expect from a P bass. The rest is up to your strings, playing style and how you process the signal downstream. Throw thumpy flats on it with a round EQ, it can sound Motown, throw new Roto flats on it with a slightly dirty and aggressive tone, it can sound Iron Maiden, rounds with an SVT will sound rock, etc...
The Geezer J was designed to work well with the P. It's a cool set of pickups, if you want to keep it passive.

I put the J at the neck, the P in the middle, and the DC (well okay it’s really a CS, but I might try swapping in a DC) at the bridge. That way the loudest pickup is at the lowest natural string excursion (amplitude), and vice versa.

Do you have that setup on your SG bass? How do you like the J in neck position? Have been wondering for a while what the best EMG pickup is for the 24th fret location…

That was a little while ago; currently it has a DC at the bridge, a CS in the middle, and a P at the neck. The J has a nice tone, but it's just a little too polite for what I like....

Cool! Fun to experiment. I have an older Schecter Elite 5, with a 40P5 in the neck and 40CS at the bridge, and am considering adding a 40DC in between them; considering the 35” scale length it would sit exactly where a MM pickup would sit on a 34” Stingray. I know it won’t sound like a Stingray but could be cool for a one-pickup sound.

EMG pickups have found their way onto my American Jazz Deluxe. Only has a 2-band tone control, so the last pot/knob is only there to fill a hole.

This one has EMG Riptides. When I bought this bass, wasn't a fan of the chrome hardware, but ended up embracing it and went with the Trujillo pickups. I had to sand down a lot of material on the pickup covers to get them to fit the pickup routes.

would you mind explaining a little what you like about each pickup in its current position?

I normally dislike P pickups. All mids, with no actual lows, no sparkle up top, and that annoying hollow tone.

But the EMG pickups, while they still have plenty of mids, add enough beef down low and presence up high to be usable for me. (In fact, my double-reverse EMG P Korina build is currently my favorite bass. It does also have an EXB though.)

So I moved the 35P to the neck in order to accentuate the lows, with plenty of mids, and still enough top-end to provide articulation.

The CS was at the bridge, but I wanted to try a DC at the bridge, so the CS moved to the middle where the P used to be. The CS is all about that typical dual-coil smoothness and fatness.

And the DC is just a take-no-prisoners fat and snarly pickup, which some people love and some people hate. I’m still evaluating it in the bridge position.

Because the three pickups all have different tonal signatures, combining them results in some interesting tones, with fewer frequency cancellations. At least that’s my theory!

Yes! Take no prisonerssssss✌️
Much love for the DC. It’s my perfect pick up. DC bridge, and either Dc neck or P neck. I am sorted. Good night Irene, shut the gate, the horse has bolted and J-D.R.k is mowing them down with EMG DC loaded goodness. happy trails mate

Has anyone used the any EMG J's (or any pup) on a fretless.

I currently have a set of Nordstand Big J blades in it. It's not bad but I am ready spoiled with the BQC preamp on my Washburn MB4 with PJ and the BQC. Perhaps I should go with Audere preamp.

Thanks.

You can use the BQC with your Nordstrands if you want to.

Not exactly: my Fame Bass (a german mid-price made/designed by Mayones) has EMG 35 soapbars with Alnico Js. The bridge J is reversed meaning nearer towards the neck.
Paired with BTC preamp. I have a sample here:
Fame Baphomet NTB Fretless - EMG JA & JA-R + EMG BTS Off - On

Alrighty! First time using the MMCS EMGs. Love, love, love! I use pretty much Exclusively DC’s in everything except a couple PJ basses so they have a tradition shape P and J. All basses have the BTC or BTS. This particular bass is a beat up Frankenstein custom build. I was playing only shortscales a few years back due to some injury woes and that was the time before the big boom in the 30” that has seemed to happen in the last four years. There was really nothing “modern and pro” to suit me so I was having things built. This started life with a head, four strings, hipshot hardware and Nordstand Big Blades with the Justin Chancellor Preamp. Then I messed with it a fair bit. It had DC’s in it for a while after it lost its head but I just installed the MM’s and they are awesome! It is the BTS circuit and I actually don’t have this one set up as 18v like most of the rest. It’s 18v ready, as I modded the battery cavity on the back, but the 9v is doing fine for this application. This bass is now tuned 1/2 to one step up depending. So it’s either F to C# or F# to D. And yeah, it’s a heavy ass shred machine. I certainly don’t play a “traditional” bass role With this particular instrument and the Project i use it in. I have another JMJ Mustang thats had the same treaťment but its a double EMG P. Anyway, highly recomend the EMG MMCS, great music man tone with the classic EMG clarity, punch and flavour ✌️

oh, let me add btw, after playing almost every commercially available shortscale on the market, If you want modern, and top quality, and don’t want to build it, go for the Spector Euro Bantam 4 or 5. They are TOP NOTCH basses and the build quality, and especially neck profile is to die for. Also of coarse the active DC pickups and BTC pre. It is a killer killer short scale.

Hi - I’m planning my next 5 string build and am looking at a 40 sized pickup for it. I have a BQC here, and would like a great “all around” pickup. I’ll be running a single pickup in it. I prefer more vintage type tones, though I have a p bass with the EMG alnico p pickup that I like a lot. That said, I’m thinking maybe a 40PX-5 might be a decent choice.

I’m definitely open to suggestions…
Not sure if you already made your selection, but I have a pair of 40P5AX and I love them. I compared them to the regular 40P5X (the A has alnico magnets), and they had a little more warmth and complexity in the mids that was perfect for me.

I had the Geezer in my P 6ish years ago. Currently have the active P pickup. A lot has changed in my setup so I don’t have a clear picture of how the two pickups differ. Has anybody A/Bed them through the same rig?

Welp I did yesterday, same bass and strings and amp. EMG P is more of everything - bass, mids, treble, output. I actually prefer this type of sound for recording and for live use, but I am mostly using an active 5er for those purposes these days. So the Geezer is in the P now and it’s classic P, not terribly different from the stock pickup. Wants a loud amp for sure.
