EMG customer support (or rather the lack of)

You might want to cut EMG a little slack: They're located in Santa Rosa, CA, like Alembic, and were in the bullseye of those terrible fires that leveled half of SR. EMG closed for a week during the emergency, so they still may very well have family or friends who are dealing with some awful outcomes.

Alembic (and the Wickershams and crew) were spared, but I don't really know how much the Turners or their staff was affected. I, too, have always had terrific dealings with Allison.

OK then. I bought my EMG DC35 and CS35 soapbar pickup like...now 10 years ago. Warranty is usually 1-2 year from the Swedish wholesaler. After 5-6 years one of the pickups (in this case, neck) started to "frazzle" and make som ambient noise. Of course I though batteries first, but no. Recorded onto computer, ramped it up with volume, and mailed it to them of what can the problem be...they took a while before they answered.

One week and a half they returned with "no, that noise shouldn't be there, we'll send you a new one, give us your details" To which I reply "oh wait, it's not within warranty it's 5 years old, and if so, how do I send this back?" to which they immediately replied "hey you don't need to, send it back, it's our gaffe, it shouldn't sound like that after 5 years or even... ever". Then I thought, there must be some catch to this, so I figured "I believe it when I see it". So 2 weeks later it turned up in my mail, didn't have to pay for shipment over the pond, or need to send that crapped-out one back. If it was within warranty period, I would've understood this, but 5 years?!

That's customer service to me.

Alright, they sure have calculated all this, and included in the price that if someone have beefs, don't hold grudges but just get on with it. It's more expensive for them to bicker back and forth, litigiations, bla bla, and just send a new one, and with this policy, everybody's happy and silent. And the internet "reviews" are on the good side always. I think the shipment these days are not much of a deal for them. And one pickup here and there, it's not a too huge loss. But anyway, I had worse problems with ESP/LTD which took almost more than half a year to replace a crappy vol pot because of its really obscure and unusual dimensions and values. On a brand new bass, that WAS within warranty.

Thus: This is an anomaly for EMG.

There is a tech service email address on their website if you dig.

I recently bought a J Set that buzzed really bad and they were quick to respond. They ended up taking the pickups back for inspection and returned them with a clean bill of health. Unfortunately when I got them back they still buzzed like mad so back to Musician's Friend they went. :meh:

I find that the EMG-J (in several of my basses!) is 100% noisier than the P or the soapbar. It's like it's a friggin SINGLE-COIL in there. I'm disappointed, and I don't understand what's up with that. The whole ORIGINAL CONCEPT of the EMG was that they had two low impedance coils being run in a balanced configuration through an internal op amp :sour:

There was an issue with the Geezer Butler PJ set a while back, the D & G poles in the J pup were installed upside down, thereby negating the correct magnetic polarity and causing a hum. EMG did look at mine and sent it back as 'ok'. It took at least a year for EMG to recognize their assembly process error. I eventually did get mine replaced with a correctly assembled pickup that has no hum, but given that, there certainly may be other pickups with incorrectly installed or assembled components that EMG's testing process does not reveal.

On the set I had one buzzed loud but both on full buzzed even louder. I removed a perfectly good shielding job and they had me do a bunch of test before sending them in. I was sure that I didn't have two defective pickups and was going to just return them to Musician's Friend but the tech service guy talked me into letting them inspect them. That was a waste of $15 in shipping. Years ago I had an early 90's J Set and they were great....but that was the days before my house was full of a million and one electronic devices!

It's still a mess.
They are still scraping 1 residential lot per day.
You still see marginalized displaced people from Sonoma County at Costco, RVs in parking lots, or on the street.
There's also people from south Texas cruising around, kinda reminds me of Katrina + the NO license plates you'd see everywhere.
I saw Texas plates and people when I was in LA last week, PTSD is real.

It doesn't matter where EMG's office is, the people that work there don't live at the office.

Also email alias mapping was mentioned.
It's really not high on the skill tree, so I would pursue contact via phone or any of the supplied direct emails.

EMG is one of those companies that takes care of the problem without asking you too many questions about where you bought the component from.
You guys should all think about pickup companies in California, they aren't so dickish about customer service.

Update..... The Rick Hunt email address didn't get me a reply, but the Alison Turner one did. Alison provided the following explanation for the lack of reply to my first 2 emails.... "It looks like the two email addresses that you were trying to reach are no longer valid. Unfortunately Rick Hunt passed away about a year ago and the customer support email is no longer valid." They are sending me out a replacement pot, which I do appreciate. Anyone else having an issue with trying to get email tech support from EMG, go direct to one of these guys/girls....
