Enough Tubes. Let's Talk Solid State! Name Your Favorites and Why?

Ampeg PF500, best amp i ever owned ! I could have any amp there is and when i cut thru the Ampeg bashing and learned about the EQ and gain structure..its now my ibby strait into Ampeg, great ampeg tude, sits and a mix live very easy and is by far the best recording amp i ever used...it changed my bass playing to where i play more now and no effects needed !!!

I have owned GK 800RB and 1001RB-II and liked both. Nice sound, light weight compared to a tube amp, very reliable. I prefer the sound of tubes so I went back to Ampeg about 4 years ago but the GK stuff is great.

The SS amps I've owned over the years
Currently using the Mesa Big Block 750 and have been since it was released..(my favorite so far)
Before the BB it was the M-Pulse 600..
Before the M-pulse it was an old Marshall 400w Integrated Bass System( model 3540)
Before the Marshall it was a Sunn Colosseum 300( I think that's what it was called)with a Sunn 1812 cab
Before the Sunn it was a Peavey Mark III (or maybe IV)
Before the Peavey it was Earth something or other with black tuck and roll vinyl
Before Earth was a Tour Clubman combo
and finally my first amp I've ever owned was a '70's silverface Fender Bassman(I know,it's not SS but I had to complete the rundown)
They have all been solid workhorses and all sounded good especially the Marshall..all have been run through some 2x15 cab until I got the Sunn cab which was a big, heavy but glorious sounding beast...which was eventually replaced with a Mesa Road Ready 2x15(and later added a Road Ready 2x10)..which was eventually replaced with a Mesa Road Ready powerhouse 1200( bad move)..which was eventually replaced with a Mesa Scout 15 cab(4 ohm)...which was eventually replaced with a Genz Benz NeoX 2x12T...so there you have it in a nutshell..

Hey folks,

Of course, I am a big tube fanatic but I also love a lot of Solid States. There's been a ton of Tube Talk lately, let's talk solid state.

What's your pick of the litter and why?

I currently use a tech 21/crown setup. Don't miss tubes. If money were no option the first amp Id buy right now would be the tech 21 dug Pinnick 1000. The second would probably be a gk 2001rb. Neither of which are tube amps.

Solid state aMps, or maybe I should say non tube amps get a bad rep imo because there's so many cheap ones and because of the affordability they sell a ton of cheap ones so often times people are comparing apples to oranges. The gk2001rb is $1350 new, the tech 21 dug 1000 is $1880. Yet more often than not people are comparing a $1800 svt Classic or $2200 svt Vr or a $2400 mesa strategy to a solid state Amp that costs less than $500. Well if your comparing a top of the line all tube amp to an "affordable" solid state amp of course your going to prefer the tube amp.

Glockenklang. To my ear, they sound better than any other conventional bass amp I have heard.
...and what I use... a Chordelectronics SPA 2232 poweramp with custom made Pre amp. that sounds even better.

As above I'm now excited to get my 400RB back in action but currently rock a Glock as it just takes no prisoners

Tecamp Puma 900. clean, massive tone, very responsive to changes in playing styles. Very easy to sound great with it, and the ringer? 2.2 pounds- 900 watts!
