Epifani 902UL....Finally

today, had a little time before rehearsal/gig in the Bk, so i took the opportunity to stop by the epifani shop, where nick had a few very cool things up his sleeve. so, despite my drooping eyelids and sleep deprived induced headache, thought i'd give a little update on the 902 amp...
as i walked into the shop, who else was there blaring thru a UL502 / UL215 setup but none other than Joey Laurciella from the neighboring Fodera shop. he had with him one of his very cool NYC bolt-on 5 string jazzes, and he was all '70s funktastic fingers. joey's groove is nasty. just dag nasty. had my neck snappin' back from his sheer funk attack. and his ash/maple NYC jazz pimped out w/ the mike pope preamp was drop dead dope.
and i take back all my crap i said about 15" speakers. course, i'll only take it back if they're wedged in an Epifani UL215. this particular cab was built for anthony jackson to try at his next [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] gig. 1/3 of the weight of his meyer setup, and yet with more than enough hifi detail oozing like warm caramel atop a haagan daas sunday. i highly doubt the almighty groovilicious one wouldnt be happy with it.
as for that UL502? custom built for a certain mr. oteil "i rock the party w/ my fodera monarch 6" burbridge. but the real kicker? this particular UL502 was outfitted and running two power sections that each pushed 900 watts. zoiks?!?!
i must have asked nick maybe no less than 9 times.

it was then that i blanked out.
we're talking 1800 total watts were crammed into the same sized head as the UL502! on the back, instead of the usual balanced XLR preamp out (not the DI, mind you), there was a speakon connector, and above that was another speakon connector.
and get this, it weighed LESS than the original UL502 sitting next to it. WEIGHED LESS. FYI, next to the acoustic image stuff, this custom 502 must be the second lightest amp i've ever held. seriously, *** are they doing in this shop? who are these crazy people? and why the hell am i not ever present when they do such things?!?!?
and yes, i asked if i could get one, but nick sad flatly, "no." said i had to wait for the UL902 which are being built as we speak. fingers are crossed... and glued together.
then nick does the ridiculous and hooks up one side feeding the UL215, while the other side fed a Performance 4x10, and holy crap, i think this is when i blanked out a second time from the overwhelming sense of joy. monstrous tone comes to mind. monstrously detailed and punchie, too. monstrously detailed, punchie, and throaty with that woody attack that can only be described as "hifi, the epifani way", too.
also, in the showroom was a pair of UL210's outfitted w/ the regular NYC cast speakers, again, built specifically for mr. burbridge, and no one else. while nick was occupied w/ a phone call, with a glint in our eyes, vince, one of the epifani gents, and i hooked up the UL502 monstrosity to the pair, and all joey could say was "that's all you need right there," while i could only mutter, "holy mother..."
but seriously, if you guys are in the area, do yourself a favor, bring an extra pair of pants, and visit the shop. you'll be glad you did. and maybe if all of TB crosses their fingers, we'll see this amp soon. really soon.

next feature to be added. Bridge mono 1800 watts at 4ohms. Sounds like severe headroom for a lotta different cabinets. This is the step up and versatility that leaders like Epifani need to be doing ampwise. Big time wattage...tone out the ying yang yet simple, lite weightweight. If it costs a plenty, it's worth it to those who need and prefer these features. I know I do. I'm glad Nick is not creating some new 600 watt amp that weighs 30 pounds. There's plenty of 'em around.
As soon as I have the money I'm tryin' a 902.
BTW, my original style rectangular Epi 212 is still the best sounding ballsy cabinet I've ever owned...just too heavy for me at the time.

Sounds like the 902 is going to be awesome. Since I never, ever gig with two cabs, it would not be something I would be interested in. However.... I assume an updated 502 is coming that would be the equivalent of half the new 902, less expensive, even lighter and smaller, and still 900 watts!

Personally, I cannot wait to get my hands on one of these. The 502 changed my view of digital switching amps, and I have no reason to believe the 902 will be any different.
Here's the lowdown:
- The amp is 5 pounds lighter than the original. 13 lbs!?!?!?!!
- 2 900W at 4 ohm amplifiers in a parallel/mono config. They aren't assignable to each channel, nor is there a pan or crossover like on other dual amp products. It's just 1800W of clean, massive power.
- Retail is $2899. Which is great considering that you get DOUBLE the power for a $300 retail price increase from the original 902. Street price is available from your favorite Epifani dealer.

I'm pretty sure the 502 was a class D amp with a linear (not switching) power supply. It sounds like the new 902 is a class D amp plus switching power supply (like the AI's and Walter's)... hence the lighter weight.
I've personally been less than impressed with the current batch of switching power supply heads, but I'm sure they are improving rapidly.
