Epifani Quest Discontinued?

You're right Tom, I fall into that camp that prefers the NYC's over the UL's. I did an A/B test on a trip to BassCentral a few months back, and TO MY EARS, the difference was clear enough that I am not going to off load my NYC's for less weight. Further, I did some A/B tests with different power amps (mostly the switching vs non switching) and the Crest has won. So I'll take the deeper tone of the NYC's and the heavier punch in the chest CA9 over say a Stew or QSC PLX. The stack you see in the pic is getting 900 W on one side of the Crest... I also have two 110 NYCs that I'll pair up with the 2 112's on the other channel and it's is QUITE impressive and punchy. This Quest is the best pre I've had in a while. The Smith 6 Elite G I have (with fresh strings no less) will snap your neck off if you're not careful through this rig.

I'll try to get a pic of the 110's on top of the 112's later tonight.

Have you ever heard that theoretical approach to your signal chain that the power amp should be turned all the way up? That (I think) is Crest's approach to the markings. Anything LESS THAN all the way up is less signal that you COULD be getting, so it is marked in descending decriments from full on.... if you get my drift.

I couldn't imagine turning the crest all the way up and throttling the volume with the preamp or the volume on my bass. I'm afraid I could do some real damage. If I ever need more volume than this (using the 2-110's on the other channel along with the 2 112's), then I'm going through a PA or I'm just gonna do the best I can with what I've got. Really, this is loud enough.

The only thing I want to try is a Walter Woods ultra, or lately, the AI Focus based on MikeBass' description of it from the Bowlus GTG. If this is 900 W at 4 ohms and puts out the way it does, I figure the AI's 800 @ 4 ohms should be impressive... I just want to try it one time and I'm really not ready to spend $2400 or more for a WW.

It's just that they're being "honest" with the markings.

The knobs on all power amps are just passive attenuators to the input stage (tho many may not think of them that way). Therefore, "all the way up" is simply 0 attenuation.

I had one of those powered roller gator racks for a while. I couldn't stand how the wheels made it dificult to sit safely on top of my cabs. Even with a cab that was wider than the rack, it always had "the potential" to move around and even slide off. Does that bug you too?

Oh and P.S. That is a fantastic looking rig!!!!

Yeah, it does bug me. But I'll tell ya what bugs me more.... having to carry a non-roller rack with a Crest CA-9 Lead Sled in it!!!!:help: :help:

So I make the sacrifice... Actually, I have one of those amp stands that I put the rack on to keep me from (1) having to lift it so high and (2) placing the rack where I want to ... in front of me or off to the side... and placing my speakers where they will sound the best optimally... like next to the drummer or in a spot where they'll project more... this picture was only for show off purposes:D I don't normally gig with the rack on top of the cabs.

I have also mounted the gear in the rack upside down so that the power strip and the wheels are on the top.... it works, but the two "allignment humps" normally used for stacking make the rack sit just a tad bit higher.... I may try it again this weekend. I'll post some pics if I do.

As I said in an earlier post to TomB.... I have sampled the UL cabs and compared the Crest to the PLX's and lighter power amps.... I'll take the weight....

Then you might want to wait for the new Epifani 902 UL. It has 2x900 watts @ 4 ohms and will weigh less than the original 902 of 18 lbs, close to the 502's weight.

Yes the PS600 is the same pre as the Quest. Same amp as the 502 but single channel. You will how ever, get the treble shift button and along with the mid-cut button, you'll get a mid sweep control. Inside the amp, the mid cut is at 1000, the sweep control will allow you to sweep the mids from 800 to 1200. (say like the Marcus slap to a very warm full slap sound).

The PS600 is scheduled for shipping late April or early May.
The PS cabs are scheduled to ship early April.

I still have one of these Gator powered roller racks and also have an SKB roller (no built in power but use a Furman). I like the SKB one better of the two. It stays on my cabs better and is just built more heavy-duty than the Gator. I never like how the exterior of the Gator hard racks always feel flimsy. Now I do love their rack bags on the other hand. Nice stuff. OK, now back to the topic at hand, Epifani!!!

Yeah Tom, it's a nice package, what would be really nice is if Nick would make a PS900.
All I know is that the amp in the 902, for some reason, at this time, cannot be split up for a single channel. But it would be great for a 900 watt, 4 ohm single channel amp like the PS600
Perhaps in the near future. :hyper:
