Well, I for one can see where expectations may be different for a preamp only (which needs to be combined with an amp somehow - presumably in a rack setup) and a standalone head.

My QII is in my hands. It looks great. I may have to "eval" a power amp tonight from my local dealer.

The plan is to connect each of my EA NL-210's to a side of the power amp, and then connect the Epifani to one input and swap the Eden and TFB preamp outs into the other input for the easiest A/B testing.

Doesn't the Eden or the TFB have a poweramp in?

Yes, but to do a true comparison, he will use the poweramp for all 3, so he will really be testing the Epi preamp vs. the preamps from Eden and Thunderfunk.

Edit - Ahh, I see what you mean, he could just run the Epi into either the Eden or TF poweramp sections and do a 3 way comparison that way...makes sense!

Mine arrived today as well. . . looks nice:p, but I won't be able to try it out until tomorrow:crying:

I'm still up in the air on whether to go ears or an Epi carry bag... in the interest of laziness, what were the prices you guys found on both of these? Thanks in advance for aiding and abetting the sluggard.

All true, except I wanted the convenience of being able to literally flip guitar cables back and forth for "instant" A/B comparisons. For that, you need a stereo power amp with identical cabs connected to both sides and the diff preamps connected to each side. :)

The results are in.

Anyone want a QII before I return it?

I mean, it's really a great preamp, but to my ears, it's no better than what I already have, and doesn't require me to spend even more money that I don't have to use it.

To my ears, the Eden is "prettier", and the TFB is "meatier". The Epi is somewhere in the middle, and yep, that means I commit the cardinal sin of new gear... constant messin' with adjustments to try to get what I want from it. No reflection on the quality of the amp, tho, it's absolutely top notch stuff, just not voiced for my tastes.

Back to integrated solutions for me (thankfully).

If anyone wants it, I'll include whatever shipping I'd have to pay to get it back to MF (which I can find out about), but you gotta cover the rest (if any). Other than that, $499.

Look up vicenzajay or something like that on page 3 of the thread... he lives in one of those internet sales tax states....might be interested....

Too bad it didn't work out for you. If the Thunderfunk is meatier, I might need to try one of those. Is there a Thunderfunk preamp? :confused:

Nope. Just the one and only integrated.

Thing is, I don't really need more power. The only reason I was lookin' at this preamp is because of the blowout price and the fact that I knew it was really great stuff, so if it was voiced right for me, it'd be worth losing some convenience over.

PM'd you back....I am curious about the email statement. Is there something I've turned off in my profile to preclude this? The reason I ask is that I've never received an email as a result of a post since I've been a member.

At some point you must have deselected (or never selected) "instant email notification" under "thread subscription" at the bottom of your "reply to thread" page when posting a reply.

When I first hooked up with TB I got emails for posts. But Verizon went through this big security/spam mod to the system and I stopped getting the notices. I tried to get help from Verizon but that was a deadend. So I just changed my notification account to my yahoo mail account.

I received my Q2 the other day. I've been busy with work but I have had a chance to hook it up to the Stew 2.1 going through the Aggie GS410. This is my serious pants flapping rig. I typically have the Eden Navigator doing the preamp duties here. I haven't had the chance to A/B the two so that should be intersting. So far I've played my Conklin fretless, the Monarch and my '70 P bass. All three have sounded pretty spectacular. I've been able to go from sounding warm and full to a perfect example of a 70's transistor radio. I've been able to dial out one of my biggest pet peeves which is the string on the "speed bump"(frets) noise. I have noticed that it is significantly easier to dial in the tone I want on the Q2 compared to the Nav. The range of adjustment isn't as great but the Nav has always been "a little dab will do ya" preamp anyway. I do really need to hook up my Epi t310 and see what happens.

Bottom line so far has been real positive. I'm not adding anything new to what's been said. I do find that it is not anything like my Demeter 201 or my F1X. And the tonal adjustability is much greater than either of those two preamps. But I won't be selling the two tube preamps to keep this one. But the Navigator may be on the line.

As far as the rack ears discussion, I think someone mentioned that they don't look all that great. I tend to agree that they look like an after thought. I might just try to craft my own.

Sounds like a reasonable workaround. My ISP has the same kind of thing, but fortunately, I can log into the SPAM trap and click on things to pass thru once or forever, which is nice.

I bet you can't do mailing lists via verizon then, either... if it matters.

I think it's great the QII works so well for you. It's an unbelievable deal on some top quality stuff! In some ways I'm happy it didn't work out for me, but sad in other ways. Oh well, I really can't complain about any of my stuff, so it's ok. :)
