Epifani UL-410 VS UL2-310

I don't have that extra set of hands at the house. Right now its one level and I can put my cab on a hand truck, so I only lift in and out of my Element (which will fit either cab no problem).

If the 310 is as loud as many 410's, I think I'd be alright with the current gigs.

I you have a small SUV, the 410UL iwth castors is a dream IME. However, hard to argue that the smaller, lighter 310UL isn't easier to schlep around.... the 210UL is easier yet. Just depends how much ooomph you need. There used to be a significant 'size and weight' penalty for the big ooomph. Luckily, now there is really only a size penalty!

Which would you say is louder (good low end, but with good punch): 2 x PS112 or UL2-310?
I asked a VERY similar question to Ken regarding UL112's, and his answer to me basically was the UL310 should outperform them.

I'd also imagine the sound would be different. I'd imagine the 310 would cut better than the dual 12's, and possibly have a bit more output for the slightly more radiating area, but maybe the dual 12's might sound a bit warmer, since they'd be missing the upper mids the 10's have. Normally, the 10's would be missing some lows of a 12, but the extra overall volume of the 310 cab and (again) the fact that there's a third driver, might more than make up for that.

Then you also have the added inconvenience of two cabs vs one. Basically, killed my GAS for a dual 12 setup since I have the 310 already (and would likely prefer it in the end anyway).

The only "wildcard" being, you'd be running 4 ohms vs 5.3, so depending on the head being used, that might also make a diff.

Or only a 'weight' penalty, depending on which brand you go with. :hiding:

And a weight penalty it is!

Lot's of good options out there at the moment.

If you want it all, the Schroe 410L is actually smaller and A LOT lighter than the Berg HS410 and a lot smaller and a little lighter than the 410UL, and sounds quite nice. I prefer the Epi tone better, and the slightly deeper depth is a non-issue, since I have an SUV. However, for those who are weight sensitive, need the big boom, and also need to fit a cab in the back seat, the newest version of the Schroeder 410L is THE BOMB. The new crossover and tweeter is very nice sounding... lot's of low end, and similar low mid oomph as the discontinued SA410. Pretty darn nice.

TBer Chef just got one, and is totally digging it!

Another great solution for a lightweight cab that just punches like heck!

Interestingly, I found the two x112UL much more low mid punchy and warm versus the 310UL.... to put it oversimplistically, the 310UL sounded like a great funk cab, the 2x112UL's sounded like a great 'rock' rig.

Again, both about the same volume, with the 310UL having a more extended low end to my ear.

If we absolutely MUST do this, then here.

The UL410 is larger (dimensionally) than the SA410 or HS410.

The HS410 or SA410 weigh more than the UL410.

Tonal considerations aside, and props to all gear manufacturers involved, I find the smaller, heavier 4x10 easier to move than the larger, lighter 4x10. I consider the smaller dimensions and ergonomics to be just as significant as the weight difference. IME/IMHO, none of the cabs are unreasonable in any regard (size or weight).

IME/IMHO and not in yours, Ken.

Tom.

 ... the HS410 is a standard weight 410. I don't understand your comment.

You've got to be kidding:confused:

OK... here we go again. For those of us that actually regularly use 410's (been doing so for about 20 years now), the holy grail was always a lightweight one. While I still love the 410XST's, the Goliath III's, the 410XLT's, and even the Hartke 4.5, that 90-110 pound weight just killed a lot of us that regularly gig with these cabs. I can honestly say I have not heard that many say... man, the weight is fine, but I wish they were smaller.

So again, the unbelievable success of the EpiUL line met that need.... cabs that were the same size and performance as the lead sleds we all were wrestling with, but now easily managed by a single person (which is key for the freelance professional).

I again totaly understand that if you play in a band and have help and use an equipment truck, etc., etc. or are a garage band guy, etc., etc., that weight and or size is a moot point. I get it!

I understand you are promoting Jim's new 410, and I'm sure it's a beauty... and again, if there are those who believe their standard 410's are the right weight, but are just too big, then Jim will have a big seller.

For others, the ability to pick up a full sized 410 with one hand, and play a 'concert' level volume gig with it is a very long waited for dream come true.

Ok, I knew you'd done this so I'm glad you chimed in. So I'm expecting the "warmth" since there's more of a "gap" between the horns and the 12's (this is also true of my 212 cab). Not quite as bright sounding.

However, the low mid punch is a bit unexpected. I guess the cab just does more of the really low end, but the 12's have more low mids the 10's don't have, if I understand you correctly. I'd assume this would be in the 200-300Hz range.

From my discussions with Alex, I think this has a lot to do with the cabinet volume relative to the number of drivers, or something like that. The 310UL and 210UL have always sounded quite scooped in the mids versus the 112UL's and the 410UL's. This is neither a good nor bad thing, but it is a difference to my ear. I am not sure this has carried over to the Series II cabs, though... so that's a caveat on what I'm hearing.

+1 :D Tbers will just have to sort this out on their own.

Again, the incredible success of lightweight neo loaded cabs, and the huge impact these types of cabs have had on me and my peers seems like a big thing.

I guess there might be a whole other innovation around 'smaller and still heavy', but that does not ring true to me.

However, for those looking for a slightly undersized, normal weight 410, I would be the first to recommend the HS410 and also the Schroeder 410R (although the 'L' sounds just as good to me... so I'd still recommend that one).

Sigh.....

Chimin' in
I've got both a 410UL and 310UL S-1's.
Been said a bunch.. the 410 totally stomps the 310.
Why do I have both....
Honestly the 410 is just too loud in some clubs I play and the 310 is smaller, lighter, and just right with either my LMII or TF. I'm using the 310 again this weekend.

If you want one cab and it fits your car ... get the 410, if you go with Epi. I'm actually contemplating a second 310 S2 like Vic's got. I would be using my DB750. Or.. I'm going back to an NV215 for the DB750.

The new Bergs are probably fantastic too.
