I'm sorry to hear about your LP Special and your house fire. I have played both basses and I did really like the LP .The way it played, the tones that I could get from it were very nice and almost bought one , but part of the deal was a trade, just didn't work out. I have an Epi thunderbird IV and I do love the sound of it. Last week I test drove an Epi Thunderbird Pro IV. It was a cosmetic second selling for 295.00 at my local music store. The finish flaw was a slight clear coat run , nothing to worry about and a scratched up cavity control plate. This was still a beautiful bass. Neck thru, but did need a better set up. Playability was very good but could be better with a better set up. Tuners did their job. The infamous neck dive wasn't there but will probably still bother some bassists on TB. Now for the bad parts for me. As a direct comparison between my thunderbird with passive pups and electronics and the Pro IV , to my ears, I like mine better. I have a few basses with active pups and preamps etc, and I was not excited with the preamp on this offering. Played with this bass for over an hour and did find a couple of usefull tones but as others on TB have stated, if I bought one i would have to make it passive or put in a better preamp. Now making it passive, from what I've been told is a simple cheap way to actually make it sound more like a Gibby. You could probably learn more on the thunderbird club but this was my review. Hope this helps and hope you come back to the Epi Club when you get one.

IMHO,FOR THE MONEY, theEpi. LP Special played very nice, had a very nice sound and felt good in my hands. Some on TB will say that it is neck heavy, but they say that about everything that doesn't have Fender on the headstock and even then some think some Fenders have neck dive. I have never had a problem with neck dive as I use good 3 inch leather straps, I'm 6 '3" and wear my basses fairly low, headstock up.Best advise is to try one out . I do think it's one of the better basses in this price range by Epiphone.

It plays great imo. It was recently restrung and set up so the action is nice on it The stock pickups sound good (the Jazz pickup is a little too thin sounding tho) but I will replace them with something else. May go with 1/4 Pounders in this one. I have a Dimarzio P pickup in my other Epi NR and it sounds great!!
