Epiphone Club

Along with the JC bass, I'm back! Through much toil and anxiety, it's a beaut.

I can’t believe I didn’t post here a month+ ago when it was NBD!

I bought this barely used from a Tber in Canada. Of these basses, this is the purplest and sparkliest I’ve seen. It was easy to set up with low action, plays like a dream, and has more low end than my 2019 VP. I love it. Perfect for Pride month, too!

I've been so tempted to grab one of these. I have the Flying V in the same finish, did soem pick up swaps (Air Norton/Super D) and it rages. Used to have a Classic iv TB, was a little dark but otherwise a great bass. These days I have a pair of Casadys, on older gold top whose electronics went scratchy and a newer red one. Cobalts flats on both, just great basses,.

The Epiphone Grabber, had my eye on these since they first came out. But I thought $999 was a bit pricey. Well now I know why!

Got my hands on a used one in brand new condition for only $630. I gotta say this is a beautifully built bass. Very high quality, definitely not a budget bass. The woods are beautiful, the fretwork is amazing and it plays oh so nice. I see why they are asking $999 for it.

BUT, how does it sound. Well that’s where it stops short of being a 5 star bass. The sound was very bla. Totally uninspiring! Shame, such a nice bass. So put it up for sale. Then on YouTube I saw a video from The Bass Channel where they swapped out the pickup for an EMG active pickup. I really wanted to keep this bass so I figured I try it. So installed an EMG MMTW split coil active pickup. Also needed to swap out the stock switch and volume pot for the EMG ones.

Had to remove some wood in the control cavity to clear the new switch and pot. Also installed a battery retention clip.

And………..WOW! What a difference! The EMG really brings this bass alive. No more weird mids which I got from the stock pickup. Very punchy and fat sounding. Being a split coil like the original pickup, I can run it in humbucker mode or single coil. Although sounds the fullest in humbucker mode.

So was definitely an awesome upgrade. Shame the stock pickup sounds so subpar, it’s a great bass.
