i thought you were in like 2 bands? whats going on?
The funny thing is, technically, I'm in FOUR bands. I apologize in advance for the long post. Originally it was about 5 times longer and more detailed, I edited it down lol.
Two of those are recording projects with a friend who plays guitar and sings, one with a different singer. The guitarist was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis since the last album we recorded and it affects his ability to play. I could take over guitar duties in the band he sings for, but he writes most of the music for that one and I don't think he'd go for it. The other one I co-write all the music and do a bunch of effects based noise stuff for it, but if he didn't play guitar in that one I think he would just quit and he asked ME to be in the band.
One of the full bands practices weekly, ideally, but the other guys are both in bands that already gig and take higher priority. The drummer is also in law school, so practice has become really sporadic and it kills songwriting momentum.
The last is the one I've been in since 2010. We practiced a bunch of their old songs and wrote a few new ones, played one show in October 2011 and it's been a slow motion trainwreck since then. We were planning to start recording an album by the end of that year, but didn't practice until the following February, then practiced less and less and finally just started recording in July of 2013. It's still not done and we kicked a member last month because of it. He basically never wrote any of his parts, just noodled every practice and claimed he was working on stuff and it would be ready on the day. Then just started canceling practices, which were at his house, then said his wife didn't want us couldn't practicing at his house anymore. So we practiced at my work and he never showed up, still never wrote anything, forgot how to play every song we played at that one show, took an hour to setup his amp, just going off the rails. We started recording without him and when we got to his parts, we just stopped. He wouldn't schedule anything, said his schedule just didn't work (he's on permanent disability, doesn't have a job, smokes weed all day). After six months the frontman kicked him out, a month later he texted him to say he was working on stuff, he just needed time, but couldn't commit to anything (that was his response...a month later). The whole time he's been on another planet, he keeps saying he doesn't understand the big deal and we're all putting too much pressure on him. So we're getting a session guy to come in and fill his spot to finish up. Once the album is done the band is breaking up and the rest of us are probably going to start something new. We had 3 practices without the guy before recording, got more done than the previous 2 years, wrote a new song, recorded it at the last minute and I like it better than everything else we have. I think the only reason we're finishing the album at all is everyone would feel emotionally defeated if after ALL THAT we just canned it. At this point I never want to hear the songs again.
I suppose I could quit any of them if I wanted to, but none of them are an inconvenience enough for me to even care at this point. I only ever play with one of them about once a month now, that one I would gladly do as a full time band if it could happen. I don't have any personal problems with any people in any of the bands, except the dude that got kicked out.
So yeah...TLDR: I'm in 4 bands, 3 of them are practically dead and the last is everyone else's side project. I've never been able to find a drummer to start my own thing.
