Episode 88: S/D thread - No Hope

Hiwatt was loud and clean. My friend is planning on using it for guitar more than bass.

Touch on the trebly side for my tastes, but that was probably EQ related.

I didn't get to mess with that one too much. But it did sound great.

Their isn't much low end to be had from the 4 hole dr103 I played. Thought the later 2 input had a bit more low end.

I've recorded bass with a 100 Watt HiWatt amp. Liked it ok, but wound up using a B15 instead for the tracking date. Coulda been the cab I didn't love for all I know

I thought of a really good analogy on comparing the two rigs.

The two loudest bands I've ever seen are My Bloody Valentine and Sunn.

MBV was like listening to a jet engine, if you took out your ear plugs your ears were pretty much immediately ringing.

Sunn was like getting a full body massage from a vibrating chair, from inside your guts. It was physically sickening and uncomfortable to be there.

My rig was like Sunn

Both were stupid loud, but in different ways.

The EGC has landed.

I won't be able to give a full run through until tomorrow. But I did get to mess around with it for a little while through my GK 1x15 combo. Unfortunately playing in F at low volumes is essentially useless so I won't get a good feel for that until tomorrow.

However the rest of the bass sounded great. Nice and balanced, reacted nicely with my Demon King. Had to tweak some knobs but that was to be expected. I get the really cool oscillation feedback I was hoping it would do, so that's a win.

The neck is super comfy to play, it's exactly what I was hoping for as the RD's neck would get uncomfortable after too long.

Kevin made my neck have a solid core as opposed to the normal hollow setup he does on his other instruments. The good part is that it resonates amazingly and the added weight gives it more natural low end.

The downside is now it's a little neck heavy. Nothing outrageous, but worth noting. I picked up a couch strap to use, which is unfortunately really slick so it adds to that, so I may switch back to my old strap that has more grip to it. I'll give it a few weeks and see what I get use to.

Super happy with how it's turned out so far. Really just excited to get To use it in practice tomorrow night.

What kind of 8-10 cabs, if it's running DB and SVT through one? Damn.

Also, I haven't seen a lot of super heavy bands, but Torche was that for me. That bomb note just kills. Every song was like getting punched in the gut. But, visceral in a good way 😉

One was a 70's 8x10 non-flat back but still has the square back cts speakers. All reconed by weber speakers.

Other is a later era ampeg 8x10 that had the speakers replaced to be split to stereo 2x4ohms loads or a single mono 2 ohm load. I think they're eminence speakers, can't recall off hand though.

Yeah that seems right. Except he replaced the speakers so he could run the DB750 at full power into a 2 ohm 8x10. Still split-able which is how he was running the DB750 and SVT into one cab.

I tried the split once, didnt do much for me but i was running a different head and probably did it wrong haha. I was trying to send distortion to 4 of them and clean to the other 4 (think i tried to bi-amp my 4pro).

I use my crate practice amp to pay music through my iPod and I think it sounds fine, can my dually do it decently I know it's not mid and tweeter equipped but could it be a stereo in a pinch?

However my setup could produce bigger/deeper low end.

In the end I'm still super happy with my Rig, I'd take it over a couple of 8x10's any day.

So louder low end. Gotcha.

Finally had Warp Rig practice last night, after a month of scheduling conflicts. We made progress on the new song we're working on. We have practice scheduled for next week too, hopefully we can accelerate our writing pace.

So far I only got to play it through my GK combo (that I'm generally unhappy with) but the EGC sounded great through it, so I can only assume it'll sound even better through a rig I actually like the sound of.

It's definitely got some heft to it, but nothing ridiculous, kind of reminds me of the Kramer I had awhile back, which would make sense.

The neck and scale are super comfortable though, with how the body is setup it's super easy to play in the first postion even with chords/octaves which generally aren't too comfortable to play on my RD or past basses.

It's actually pretty crazy if you put the EGC and my Hondo double cut toe to toe the EGC is actually about 1/2" shorter than the Hondo, but with the bridge orientation and such the scale is a good 2" longer than the 33 1/4" or whatever the Hondo is.

I already switched back to my old strap and the neck dive isn't nearly as bad. It's one of those really old Levy guitar straps that they used to make for guitar center....can't find them anymore, but I swear they were the best straps, I should have gotten more of them when I had the chance.

That being said the Couch strap I got is super nice, but it's got a vinyl on the inside of the strap and it's just super slick, the bass slides around on my shoulder a lot with it. That being said the couch strap is super sharp looking and well made, it'd be a shame to not use it.... I'll give both a shot at practice tonight. Once I'm playing and not just standing around my apartment will be a much better test as to which works best.

Oh yeah, the body is shockingly light (which I guess isn't too shocking since EGC's are hollow construction) but it's still surprising.

The solid neck feels like a weapon, it's probably a good thing we don't play as many crowded house shows as we used to...I'd be likely to seriously injure someone or myself with my bass now...
