a little bit of both. it's hard to mix with everyone present because we all have different views on how it should sound/feel. it would be a lot easier if one person mixed and then the others provided their input after. Then go back and adjust based on the opinions.

not really an option due to cost. The place we're at now is by far the cheapest. However I am seriously considering investing in some half decent plugins and mixing the next record myself.

Speaking of mixing, Bongripper is currently in the process of doing that, I'm actually listening to a mix right now.

But we're doing it via the internet and just sending notes to our guitarist. At this point we're pretty much all on the same page as to what things should sound like and how loud things should be.

I'm excited for people to hear this record, I'm super proud of it.

its nice that my guitarist knows how to do all this and the rest of us kinda just give thumbs up or down. we always get his best first shot then we all make notes and we go from there. just finished retracking my bass last night, one more set of guitar tracks to go then we start the mix over again. although mixing never seems to take that much time because my guitarist kinda mixes as we record. a lot of levels get set as he records other tracks, seems to work for getting a decent baseline.

Are you doing it yourself or is someone else doing it? If it is someone else then you need to find a new person. Mixing should not be a chore. If the person you are working with can't understand where you are coming from musically then they are never going to make it sound how you want. I worked in recording studios for years and it drove me nuts when the head engineer just didn't understand what the band was asking for. I would have to try and translate often getting it right, but I would ask myself if I wasn't here what would have happened because the band and the engineer were just not communicating.

If you are mixing yourself, do the tracks sound good on their own. This is usually the problem with stuff you do yourself. If that tracks don't sound at least 95% of the way there already then you are in trouble. The tracks I finished for my band I didn't love because our old drummer gave us just a few hours to record a couple songs. The drum tracks just don't sound very good and that was my fault but I didn't have time to mess around with getting the drums where I want them so they suffered.

the challenge isn't the engineer not understading. it's that each of the band members has a different view point, we're all just throwing out ideas at him, things get incoherent and a bit chaotic.

I'm probably making it sound a lot worse than it actually is. I just want it done. we're already 3 weeks behind where we though we would be and about $1000 deeper in the hole than we estimated....and we haven't even mastered or pressed any vinyl yet.

on a different topic. have any of you guys with band facebook pages ever though about creating a personal profile page for the band instead? From what I understand, facebook will show all your posts to all your fans, which are now "friends", if it's a personal page compared to only 3%-9% of your fans if you use a "page" profile.

I guess the trick would be trying to get all the fans to become friends with the new page....
