Episode 88: S/D thread - No Hope

Version 2. I realized I had the wrong clipping on the rat then did some minor tweaks to the ped and GK. Think I'll stick with the GK for the metal band. So much easier to dial the SVT though :)

Man I feel special now!

The only thing I really use Facebook for is FCOAW as another DOOM room I post in. It lead me to find the guy that restored my Vulcan, who I plan on having him restore all my Peaveys at somepoint. That and band management.

I don't love or hate FB. Just is what it is. Can't remember how many likes Legendary ShackShakers have. More than 8k, less than 10k last I checked. A country artist I play for has nearly 100k likes and seems to feel it's been helpful to his career. I wouldn't know. I look at YouTube hits to give me a more accurate idea of popularity, in a way

not really an option due to cost. The place we're at now is by far the cheapest. However I am seriously considering investing in some half decent plugins and mixing the next record myself.

Attended mix sessions without a producer are a b*tch, it's madness.

I'd love a chance to do a mix on one of those songs, just for sh*ts and giggles. These days though, asking someone for raw tracks is somehow an impossible task, because they just have 15,000 PT files and don't know how to bounce anything. Even though I do it easily on a regular basis in Logic.

This is how we got screwed on our first demo. Wanted someone other than the studio to do our mixing and each of our songs had like 300+ tracks each. What the hell.

Hmm I`m going to have to try your Rat Tail setting out on my RT when I get the chance.
I`ve got my RT bass settings as: Freq knob @ 7 o`clock
drive knob @ 1 o`clock
clipping knob 1 @ 9 o`clock
clipping knob 2 @ 9 o`clock
toggle in center position
I tweak the knobs a bit more when I play guitar thru my rig.

I forgot to mention that my settings look tame when I compare them to yours but I forgot that I run my OCDemon into my RT for extra Doomy sweetness.

Something very strange happened when I was messing with stuff. The rat seems to really like the GK and ok with the SVT. I got out my demon and it sounded like complete garbage and really thin thru the GK and almost knocked me on my a$$ with the SVT. Only thing I can figure is how the phase of the pedal is interacting with the amplifier. Or maybe something to do with the gain structure on each pedal. No real clue, just really odd. Also something odd. I seem to get more low end out of the GK by engaging the DB cut and then boosting the volume and master.

I don't think I'm being overly critical when I say that kind of thing is pathetically amateurish. That's at best, at worst it's someone just intentionally being lazy or f*cking a client over for more money. Anyone who is taking people's money to record should know how to bounce tracks down to wav files and not just have a Pro Tools session with hundreds of chopped up takes. 6 or 7 years ago I had a friend record my old band with a Mackie Onyx board running into a laptop, using I think PT LE or Acid or something. He was able to bounce the tracks down to stems (stereo pairs of each instrument group) and burn the files on a CDR for me to mix on my old Akai HDD recorder/mixer. 10 years ago I recorded projects on a 16 track and was able to send them out to get mixed. I was able to mix projects on my current rig that I recorded with my old one, using a completely different DAW. It's pretty standard practice traditionally to have a different engineer for tracking and mixing. Not having the ability to send tracks out to a mixing engineer, not having them ready at the conclusion of the session without being asked even, screams "I don't know what I'm doing!". If they can't handle that, why the hell would I want them in charge of something that actually requires skill, like mixing the damn song?

Sorry for the rant, that's one of my hot button topics. :D
