i think if you're looking to spend less than a grand, they're probably the best bass you're going to get. the build quality is alot better than most other basses in that price range. some ibanez stuff is comparable, some schecter stuff too.
i'm playing the D-6 model, it's pretty traditional looking. sweet bass though: 6 strings, neck through body construction, 7 piece laminate neck, esp active humbuckers and 3 band eq (the stock electronics sound great, imo), 24 jumbo frets, super low action, no buzz, nice tight low B string...i could go on
Seem like a good value to me. Especially the deluxe series and the B series basses with the spalt tops. I have played all of the aforementioned and they can' be beat for under a grand. Real EMG's and pre amp, not HZ's. Neck through, nice looking, and decent hardware.

Consider the vintage series. They are expensive but extremely well-made (in Japan). Great feel, great look, great sound.

I had an LTD B-204 a long time ago and in some ways I regret getting rid of it because part of the reason was the name (stupid, I know ...). After owning quite a few basses since then, I realized that it was decently made, very versatile, and it looked mighty nice, too (I had the natural ash body with a rosewood fretboard).
Just keep in mind that I got rid of it somewhere around 2000 and I don't think I've played an ESP since then, so it's possible my memory is kind of cloudy at this point.

If you like them, you like them. Personnally I don't, they look too wingy for me, (wingy, is that a word? Today it is.) Anyways I only played one and didn't care for it. But if you like them go for it. I would try a Schecter first though and see what you think.
schecter is definitely good. i wouldn't hesitate to recommend one, but I've always found esp basses (and guitars for that matter) to feel more "solid" than schecter instruments, if that makes any sense
