Esperanza Spalding : You gotta watch this

Reminds me of all kids getting a trophy for winning or loosing

When people became conscious of Jamerson they spoke about how adventurous his choice of notes were along with the ensemble that was Motown. I listen to Esperanza and like JJ she'll be playing a line and then gliss to the upper register and end with a harmonic or some other note that I didn't expect. Fearless!!! Her musicianship is on par with anyone playing and she's a young woman still evolving. And she has a full plate. Isn't she a professor in Cali besides what she does on stage? I just hope she keeps growing and staying true to herself.
I think that contraption is only mounted on the Southpaw fretless 5 string. It looks really comfortable and I am definitely interested in that system.
Thanks, that is kind of discouraging. I liked her system better than that one where you need to drill a hole in your guitar for another strap button. Just trying to see if getting my bass off my shoulders would feel better.

You should try spending some time with the young people you denigrate, you might learn something. Like how to spell.

I will not take anymore from the Esperanza discussion but feel obligated to respond.
I have raised two very successful and loving children, with one going on to professorship in early English History and studying abroad. I did not give them awards for successes they did not earn, and with that they have learned how to do better and try harder for what they want in life. Additionally, by doing this, they have also learned important lessons about the real world; they have learned that just playing does not count, there are truly winners and losers in this world and few things are handed to you for simply participating. Teaching children anything else and sending into the world is cruel in my mind. I have denigrated no person.
Now for you I would say that opinions about people you know absolutely nothing about is shallow, blatantly ignorant and extremely rude. Your behavior suggests that education obviously goes beyond spelling.

Seriously, is there anyone else in the world that could pull this off? Seemingly effortless, pitch perfect, complex vocals from memory, simultaneous pitch perfect, complex bass on a 5 string fretless while prancing around on stage interacting with the audience and other musicians. During one song she's singing and playing the bassline on what looks like organ pedals with her foot. Anyone, anyone...Bueller?
I totally get what you are saying and really can't refute it. However, music as an art form has to speak to the listener, talent at that point can be somewhat irrelevant. It doesn't matter though, she has a lifetime career ahead where she will be able to experiment to her hearts content and will always have work - that comes with her level of talent.
I'm going to see her tonight in San Diego! I'm beyond excited. I've had the opportunity to see her in the past, playing her older material, and it was phenomenal.
There are very few artists who are pushing the envelope as successfully. I could never say all of the things I would like to in a forum post but I'll at least say that she appears to be an intelligent person and understands that when pushing the envelope you're bound to exclude a few people.
People enjoy what they've heard before, it's human nature. The fact that she has so many people (rightly or wrongly) trying to defend her right to express herself is really admirable. That's one of the things I like about talkbass. There are a few people here who don't like her music but they respect, and defend, her right to express herself. Esperanza is a gift to the musical community. She has brought seemingly limitless creativity to the musical spectrum and I'm really grateful to her

While I don't feel that this applies to Esperanza IMHO.. I definitely understand and agree with this sentiment. Yngwie Malmsteen comes to mind. There is a point where Talent, or musical ability, stops being musical and is another quality in and of itself. Each person defines this "line" or "barrier" with their own experiences and tastes.

So your expanded agenda is to celebrate your own children as superior to the rest of the world's mollycoddled youth. Nice try, but unfortunately you do not merit a parenting trophy either, as reproducing oneself is the least impressive feat in all of nature.

I did a search the last time the "participation trophy" theme came up. There's no conclusive data to support either way. It literally comes down to political alignment as to whether someone believes the threat is real. I doubt it had much effect on Ms Spaulding's career.

Now having watched the full show several times through, I agree with you. I hear echoes of Joni and Jaco but so many other influences - and Esperanza herself is completely amazing, as are all the other players. That is not an easy show! It lasts about an hour and they are all playing/singing/acting/dancing their butts off through the whole thing. The guitarist and drummer are great, but the three who form the "chorus" are also very multitalented.
My first reaction was that it was great but not for me ... but having watched the whole show through a few times, I can only say "wow." Obviously not directly commercial, but more like an off-Broadway show that eventually becomes a big hit. Some amazing music, and while I don't completely understand the "plot" (and I know it's not a plot in the conventional sense), it holds my interest. If she threw in a couple of more standard songs (not suggesting she should), it could take off.
And, oh yeah, what 5-string fretless is that?
