EUB project

Finally ordered a monopod (upright extension support). I found one in carbon fiber w/an included tripod attachment for a decent price. This brand also comes in black bits (the adjustment rings) but this specific combo at that decent price had anodized blue bits ~ either it will be a minor detail or I can paint them satin black. The top ring (camera attachment) unscrews, the foam is removable and the branding stickers will come off. It's 17.7" folded and extends to 65" - about twice what is needed so being less extended will help keep it solidly stable. The tripod will also come in handy both playing and leaning against a wall corner.

The retracted 17.7" will fit nicely on the back. I'm thinking 2 aluminum supports similar in design to the bridge that will float it just above the body.

Ordered a bow. Yo-Yo Ma said (if I'm quoting him correctly) that over 80% of the sound an instrument (violin, viola, cello, double bass) comes from the bow. It was from an article in an issue of The Smithsonian focusing on Pernambuco as an endangered wood. A Frenchman developed the style/design of bows we recognize today. Once he had the design he tried many different woods to determine which worked best and he found Pernambuco was the perfect wood for his design/needs. At that time it was so plentiful that they made shipping pallets out of it. He bought a huge supply of these pallets (probably for not much!) and went through them all securing the best/ideal slats for his bows. Fast forward - this demand over decades depleted the trees to the point of extinction. Realizing this, a guild of US northwest coast luthiers united to promote new growth Pernambuco groves in Africa (I seem to recall) to create a future supply of this wood specifically for bow-making. That being said - bows can cost thousands of dollars at the upper levels. I however found one made of all the right stuff - but is affordable for my needs. Pernambuco shaft, ebony frog w/silver-wire/leather wrap and a decorative "Parisian Eyes" inlay. (and bleached horse-hair) I'm sure it will suffice for what I will use it for. What drew me to this bow (there were others for various prices) was that it looks exactly like the one I owned/used in the 70's-80's. (sold it in the early 90's) - I mean exactly down to the last detail! Bows all look more or less the same, but they do offer slight differences depending on the luthier. (all hand-crafted) I could have bought a carbon fiber version for the same price (there were varying $ levels of them also) but opted for tradition, and a bit of nostalgia.

A bit of a derail of my own build thread - just bought these Ibaneze tuners on eBay. (only bidder!) I've always loved this heart-shaped design and considered buying a Blazer or Roadster just to have them. No bass to put them on as of now but I do have a Fiesta Red J body that could get acquainted with these tuners... (classified ad: Heart shaped tuners and sexy Fiesta red J in search of a cool slim J neck! Lets get together and make music!) :) :bassist:

I think seeing a pic of yours was when I first got really interested in them. I pretty much dig everything about the Ibanez hs shape & decal also. Once I get mine I'm going to similarly buff them out. So... they look to have smaller barrels/posts that are straight cylinder shaped - correct? Wouldn't jive with at larger-hole Fender necks which is good to know. My Supersonic and the Super SLX both have the smaller posts.

Oh man, are you going to make me pull this bass out of the case to check? I have a broken toe! And there's all kinds of stuff piled around that area...

Give me a day or two, I'll get my Hubby to help.

no - no - I'm certain they are the smaller posts - don't bother Nex. Mostly looking for a head nod! :)

Post/stand arrived this morning. (fast!) I removed the stickers and painted the anodized blue black. It should work out really well. The separate tripod folds up for travel - all & all it's pretty cool and the perfect part for this project.

The floor-end bumper fits the threaded top so a nice easy 'cap' resolution. The carbon weave is subtle but there, sort of in a barber-pole direction.

I'm very interested in your mounting plans. I suppose this is a question... Maybe it's the pic (or my meds, Ha Ha ;)) but, is the "foot" wide enough to let the bass stand alone?
I think a slight variation of this design could make a sweet harp string bass.

BTW, I plane to e-mail you tonight :thumbsup:

Thanks! :) No, the tripod base (foot) is more so it has added stability when playing, or resting in a corner. It's small and easy to put on/take off. It would work with just the rubber end also, but the tripod should plant it better. It has a ball-joint articulation which can be locked as well. I've seen the self-standing NS EUB system, but not what I want. I want the 'post' to be integrated within the whole design context in a architectural/portable/structural way.

About to head over to the shop to cut these out. Once finished, they will be sprayed satin black, the carbon fiber rod epoxied in place and the feet will be inset into the body. The 3rd piece is the support for the movable pu. (it will have a maple piece glued to it which will carry the pu poles) As it's aluminum, I'll drill a hole in the feet and glue in a magnet flush. The body (if I go this route) will have magnets inset into it in a number of positions. (2 rows, maybe 1/4" apart) The other design option is a fixed pu position located at the heal of the bridge. I figure the movable one will at least be a good way to determine an optimal location for the pu sound-wise but if the difference is minimal, I'll probably go fixed to keep it simple.

On my bike ride, I thought it would be more stable to reinforce the post supports w/a laminate of the maple, like on the bridge - another trip to the shop.

Started to hone the pu support feet - 1/4" holes for 1/4" disc magnets. Will probably round it more than the right side is already. The magnets will be strong so there's no need for much of a footprint beyond the disc. I determined that the available positions for pu unit placement will be from the fb heal to the center (between fb & bridge) as the radius widens toward the bridge. So kind of the P-bass sweet spot at the south end and fatter bottom at the north end.
