Double Bass Evah Pirazzi strings megathread part I

The first gig with the EP's went pretty well (see my thread in Amps thread for a sound clip). The G string didn't bother me as much as I thought. I absolutely love the A string in this set. Such balls it has.

Still curious about the Oliv G with this set (still my all time favorite string), but I will probably wait until my Evah E gets here and try the full set for awhile.

I've also had EP's on for a while now, with only a small break to reverse test the Bel Cantos, which I had tried previously. IMO they are both very good arco strings. I'm not sure if one is 'better' than the other, but they are definitely different from each other. Where the EPs get it for me is Sound. Both pizz and arco they just have the round articulate sound I want.

That said, I'm about to try an Olive G, and possibly even a D :crying: You'd think I'd be satisfied...

I heard Greg Garrison live with Punch Brothers a month or so ago and he had the best sound of just about anyone I've heard live (that's a lot of bassists), with EPs and and an Olive G. He played both pizz and arco with a very simple mic setup (ATM 35 only) and sounded great on all of it. Obviously he has an awful lot to do with how good he sounds, but lots of other great bass players don't have Sounds I aspire to (just chops!).

I just hit the year mark, and bought a second set to have on hand as a backup.

I'm sticking with them for the long haul as they are working for me - arco, pizz, and they amplify fine. So far, under very heavy use, they have retained their tone, punch, and the winding is completely in tact.

+1 to the EP's!

i have been using ep's for about 5 months or so. great strings and i should just be satified and happy with it and leave it alone. but i have a olive g on its way and have a pizzacato d and a that i really want to try on my bass. i do play bluegrass and want to try the true gut core thing. if they dont work out for me at least i know i have the ep's that i do like. these strings are incredible as far as staying in tune. i live in south georgia and play outdoors mostly in really humid and hot weather and rarely have to retune during a gig. the gut strings wont be so kind from what iv'e read, so i may hold off till october to put the guts on. i have only been playing for about a year and a half but have tried lots of different strings. i have been satisfied with most i have tried but will have to say the ep's have been the best for my needs. i'm hoping they dont die on me if i choose to put them back on after i try the guts. i had obligatoes that i had on and off a couple times and they did'nt seem to like that to much. glad to be part of the ep love fest.

I too have been using the EP's for about a year now. First on my German bass and in the last 6 months or so on my Prescott. I've been very happy w/ them overall for piz and arco. I've been enjoying their warm tone, arco friendliness and left hand feel as compared to Spiros.

However, I just returned from an outdoor gig in really sticky, humid weather. If I had known we were gonna play outside I would not have brought my Prescott, but I did. The EP's sounded great as always and certainly stayed in tune, but I found tonite w/ all that humidity they felt stiffer than usual
and were somewhat more fatiging on this long gig. Bass Dan, do you find this to be the case w/ humid conditions?

Sometimes a good carved bass can swell some and feel harder to play because of the strings rising a bit and the fingerboard and neck getting all sicky and 'gunked up'.
Or maybe I was just tired from a long weekend of gigs, but I can't help thinking that good ol' Spiros would been a little easier in this situation.

i have hybrid bass and i have not really noticed them stiffer in the heat and humidity compared to a nice air conditioned room. i have however found that room acoustics and overall stage sound can change the way i play them. they are sort of a stiff string to begin with and if i overplay them to try and get more volume out of my bass my right hand can become fatigued quite quickly.

i am using a spiro mittle e string with the rest of the set. not sure if this is a great match for these strings or not. i really liked the sound of my spiro e so i decided not to get the ep e. amplified the spiro e can be quite thunderous sounding compared to the ep's. probably more because of my playing than the strings. i may try a ep e string,sounds like most folks like them.

Honest.... I read the entire thread a couple of weeks ago, before my one year Evah anniversary. Quite a collective diary.

Chris Quinn once asked me to send my impressions of the EPs after they were on the bass for a bit (never got around to doing it). Maybe I should just direct him to this thread.

Yea I was reading it last night again myself. I've got a fresh set coming for me to burn in on FrankenKraut.

I gave away my last set. I do that a lot.

I don't ever want to think about the fiscal morass I leave behind with this stupid string thing.

And burn fast, they do! Only antidote is to stand in a cold shower with 3-4 50 dollar bills and tear them in half. At least then you can recover your money.

Honestly, these strings turned out to shortest lived, and most over-hyped product ever.

Good strings. very loose feeling, lots of power compared to the Bel Cantos - more of a "brash" tone under the bow. They can handle more weight than the BCs. A little hard to get a precise start on the G string, but I get the feeling that'll get better. A lot of presence, especially the nice bloom on the pizzicato, which the Bel Cantos didn't have. Pretty good right out of the box. I'm partial to Pirastro strings, glad to be back after a year with BC's. I did enjoy the BCs under the bow, though. Very polite strings. Articulate and responsive.

I'm hoping these will be a good compromise for someone who wants to play chamber music and jazz as well as in the orchestra, all with the same moderately-priced bass. That's what I'm hoping, anyway.

I hit the wall with the Evahs at one point.... I thought they were dead pretty early on..... I noticed that I mentioned it somewhere in the zillion pages preceding. Then I fixed a popped seam on my bass, everything snapped into focus and has been good ever since.

I do recognize that these things aren't for everyone. They come very close to doing what I need a set of strings to do, which is everything. :smug:

PS.... I think we should rename this thread "The Evah-dyssey"....Frickin' Homer had less to say than all of us! :eek:

I hear that their won't be any free bass strings down there either.....
