Dammit.... every time I think I want to do that, I have a really good night on the EPs. It's the front of the note, mainly. I just don't think I can part with that yet, I'm addicted to it... The growl's just right, the arco's really gorgeous.... I just can't do it yet. They're not autopilot strings at all... you need to meet them halfway, and I can play more stuff on the Spiros.... but, boy, they really sound nice.

I just had one of those good nights on the EPs. Indeed, it is exactly as you say. It's the front of the note! As I mentioned, it seems to add articulation to an otherwise dark string. Really nice!

Moved my EP's from my carved, to my ply to make way for a set of Garbo's and they thankfully darkened up my rather bright sounding plywood Hofner.

Now those outside gigs in August will sound much better.

The funny thing is that my bass is pretty dark-sounding to begin with so I thought the EPs might just make things too dark. Not so. That's the thing again about all the interactions between individual basses and strings. I'm constantly reminded that a string that works great on one bass can be a total dog on another. In addition, it's difficult to predict what will be successful and what won't. So, we spend our money... :)

I have a reasonably dark bass. I really like the G and D, and for pizz, the E and A were great. For arco, the E and the A were a bit too muddy for me and the G and D didn't sing enough in thumb position. If I were primarily playing pizz, they would have been fantastic. Your mileage may vary. Actually, I am very interested in the EP weichs, when/if they ever come out.

I've had Evahs on my dark sounding Prescott for more than 10 months. They sound great and I especially love the feel under the left hand as compared to all steel strings. As for their darkness being a problem, it is like w/ any string really, as the noise and din in a room goes up they need a bit more midrange and hi's in the amp eq to compensate for lost definition. This is only really evident in bad acoustical environs. Sometimes when playing all acoustic in a boomy sounding space they can be a bit muddy to the player, but out in the room I'm told they sound great and really carry. In a good sounding space they are glorious on my bass. When I need added articulation I play a bit closer to the bridge and they respond wonderfully.

I'm finding for me I may like these even more amplified than acoustic.

I usually am a mic only player, but I put back on the Schertler Dyn B last week because of a setup issue at this gig where the drummer faces right across the bass top and mic.

The sound through the Bose system was the best that pickup has ever sounded. I had to laugh at the piano player telling a popsicle player who came in last night all about how my bass sounded so natural now that I was using the mic/ H-Clamp setup. He thought I was still mic'd up for the past week.

Acoustic or mic'd they are serviceable...not as good as the Gamut gut or the Oliv's but way cheaper.

I threw mine on my merchant vertical (for sale! :)) just to see what they sound like and I felt that most of the nuance that makes the EPs awesome sound-wise gets lost. playability is unchanged. overall, i prefer spiros or corellis on the MV...they just seem to work better with the electronics.

I use EPs on my Vertical Bass (Full Circle, AI Focus, WZ 110) and they sound great. Most of the players in my band noticed the switch when I made it. The most common comment was "woody". I tried Mittels on my LaScala for a few days and one gig and am back to EPs there, too.

Well, I broke down and put a used Oliv G on with my EP's last night. I have a good gig coming up Monday and despite assurances to the contrary the EP G just never loosened up in feel. On my bass it always felt tight and choked unless I REALLY laid into it FFF style. No dynamic range, unlike the rest of the set.

Practicing last night I love the feel of the Oliv, but it seemed to lack some volume. It has gotten better this morning, and the feel is so much better I'm going to put up with it for awhile anyway.
