Exercise enthusiasts and wannabees only !!!

Summers are so great for fitness. We have a membership to an outdoor pool here in town that is built from an old quarry and has olympic sized (50m) lanes. Whenever we go, I start the visit off with 800m of lap swimming, then go hang with my family and tread water while shooting the poopie.

Lap swimming is just wonderful: it's hard to hold on to all your troubles/first world problems when all you can think about is your next breath. Swimming a half mile in the late afternoon is also great for sleeping later. As an added bonus, when it's over 90 degrees here in the 'Ville, the only two places I ever want to be are in the air conditioned house or in the pool. And I spend enough time in the house...
Swim 800m?! I don't even remember the last time I ran 800m!

My knees are so shot at this point that I don’t think I could run 800 meters either. But with swimming, the lungs are what dictate how far you can go. It’s kinda like biking that way.

after years of working around injuries, which is very difficult and often leads to hurting the existing injuries, i am getting somewhere. i have lost some weight, and i'm building muscle - my legs, arms and back are much stronger, allowing me to do more and feel great about my progress. i can now ride an exercise bike vigorously for an hour, unheard of two years ago.

and i've become a master of workarounds when reinjuring my muscles.

Me too :) .

For you or anyone else reading this who it might apply...

I had lower back issues for 6+ years. Went to chiropracters, doctors, physical therapy, fitness trainers, yoga classes, and read lots about back pain. I bought a bench to hang myself upside down. I stretched like nobody's business. I worked around the pain which was there every single day. Nothing worked. Sometimes I couldn't get out of bed, other times it was just a nagging pain when bending over that I accepted as something I'd have to accept and live with.

Then I stumbled upon this video:

I cried when I tried the first exercise because what he said was true. It fixed me, immediately! The pain was completely gone. It only lasted for about 10 minutes, but I knew he knew what he was talking about and followed the other suggestions he makes in the video. A few months later my back pain was gone, pretty much for good. It still gets stiff from time to time and can hurt after a crazy workout or gig, but I'm free.

Anyhow - if anyone's pain is the one he points out - what he says, works. Took patience and never completely giving up for me to find that :) .

I believe the same may be true for other pain, too.

[edit] Just checked that link again. At the time I found it he had several thousand views. He now has 37 million, and the comments are pretty much what I would write if I left one. I may just do that now :) .

Pic of what I used to look like a few years back. 340lbs and lived in a breweries. Used to wear XXL and XXXL. Now I wear larges and XL'S hang off me.

Keep grinding and trust the process my fellow enthusiasts. Not too shabby for a 46 year old.

we recently got one of these
Cable Tower with Weight Stack
and wow, is it great! such a step up from our previous valour fitness cable machine. plus using both handles, it gives a total of 205 pounds. the action is so smooth, it's been a pleasure, and no more fiddling with plates - woohoo!

as a secondary move, i got a tiny walking pad with a 7% incline on prime day. it's kicking my butt - in a good way.

Looks great! What walking pad did you get?

OK. My yearly shot :) .

Was tough going at times this year. I had a Bermuda Cruise that I really wanted to be in shape for, so I could eat all the ice cream and pizza I wanted. And I did.

For me, at age 62, its become very much about just staying in the game - and recomitting whenever I can. As I think I posted earlier, my runs are no longer runs. I trot at around 15-17 minues a mile, but do it for 4-6 miles 3X a week. On the other days I do pushups, very light weight dumbells, and the Total Gym. Feeling good. I only get to keep this routine up though for a couple more weeks...

Howdy folks! I’ve been pretty consistent with movement since January. Mostly walking, yoga and calisthenics.

but, I’ve been dealing with a nagging foot injury since, oh, mid August? I made a podiatry appt but it’s not for another 8 weeks! :( So now I’m in limbo. I took about 2 weeks of very limited movement, gentle yoga and reducing steps to a minimum.

I did have a glimmer of hope today though. I pushed the pace on a walk just a little, and the pain actually started to subside by the end of the walk. So I’m starting to think that I need to strengthen and mobilize? I’ll be cautious but I think I’m going to lean into it and see if I can improve things that way.

I’ll probably be adding a bit of leg work, and shift most of my movement to arm and ab work in the meantime, maybe try the bike and rower again. All a lesson in being cautious and adaptable! Wish me luck :)

Did 2 days worth of intense research and decided today to invest in some adjustable dumbells.

Bowflex almost had me. Then I came across the Nordic Track, and they won. For anyone who knows anything about these things, the 2 run a tight race for quality, price, and happy owners. What it ultimately came down to for me were 2 things.

1. Nordic Track Dumbells aren't HUGE. They're only as big as the plates you're adding, much more like regular dumbells. Bowflex are HUGE always, even if you're only using 10 lbs.

2. Nordic Track have flat ends. You can rest them in your lap more easily, and stand them up on the floor for squats and stuff like that.

Anyhow - I'm psyched. Feel almost like I'm waiting on a new bass :) .

And its time I start moving up in weight... been adding reps to 15 lb dumbells and my workouts are getting ridiculously long :) .

Nice choice on those dumbbells @Joe Nerve. After our similar review, we went with a set from PowerBlock.
The PowerBlocks also stay the same size no matter if you're using 10 or 50 pounds. I like them being the same size, so that was one of the reasons for us that we bought them. It sure is nice though to have a few choices so everyone can get what they want.

Yes. Those get excellent reviews and are right up there with the 2 I mentioned! But I definitely wanted the more traditional dumbell style. Agreed that its great there are many options.

Only ones I was dead set against were the cheaper ones where people complain about plates getting loose, breaking, falling off. I don't need to loose any teeth, or break my nose, foot, etc. :) Though I tend to also think the people breaking these things are dropping them like regular dumbells, which I have no intention of ever doing.
