Exercise enthusiasts and wannabees only !!!

I recently figured out a way to get some semi-regular exercise and also solve a difficulty involving my recreative choices.

I recently got one of those little plastic boats that I intend to use for fishing on small local lakes and I've been dreading spending money on an electric trolling motor and deep cycle battery, plus acquiring a boat title and paying for the yearly registration fee.

Until I learned that, in my state, a boat as small as this, as long as it's unpowered, is exempt from needing a title and registration. So, I decided that I'm going to be doing a lot of rowing and paddling the rest of this summer.

I'm fully aware of what I'm getting myself into, as I have decades of experience paddling rowboats and canoes, while fishing or just exploring the waterway. They only difficulty is strong winds. It gets difficult to paddle against a stiff wind, and it gets exponentially more difficult as the wind speed increases.

My goal is to get 3 days a week in the boat for at least 2 hours each day. Weather permitting, I'd like to be able to keep it up into October. This is a type of exercise that I actually enjoy. One of the few silver linings of the pandemic is the amount of time I've been spending in nature compared to before.

What a great idea. Way to think outside the box.
After watching so many rowing events in the Olympics, I will be thinking about you rowing to a gold medal in the TalkBass Olympics. :D

Thanks. I've already taken the boat out 3 times this summer, once with my 8 year old granddaughter. My grandfather took me and my brother out on a rowboat many times when we were kids, and when we were old enough, we took the boat out by ourselves. I really want to give my grandkids some of the same opportunities that I had.

IF is not the only way to get the insulin down. Keto gives you the advantages of IF full time. And is protective of dimentia/Alzheimer’s, cancer, diabetes, and more. I love my keto life. My fasting insulin levels are around 4, and because I’m deeply fat adapted, and running on ketones as my primary fuel, after a tough workout my glucose levels can get down to around 50. And I feel great as my ketones are fueling most things, and my body is providing just enough glucose through gluconeogenesis.

My energy, mental clarity, sleep, lack of inflammation, are all the best they’ve ever been. My workout endurance is fantastic.

So, I can’t run (too high impact) hate stationary cardio machines (except my water rower) don’t like bikes, but discovered this summer I love the elliptigo. It’s like zero impact running more than an elliptical machine or bike. It’s great. It gets me out doors, fresh air, I do a ton of zone 2 training with some HIIT on it, and do resistance training on strength days. 52 and feeling the best I’ve felt in my life.

I love HIIT, so this thing is a win for me. It’s a hell of a workout.

Thoughts from y'all on fitness trackers/smartwatches/GPS?

Honestly, the popularity of these things always leaves me SMDH. I have sweat glands to tell me when my heart rate gets to where it needs to be, and if I’m wondering if I’ve taken enough steps today, I should probably go move around some more just to be sure. :)

I was looking at the fenix line from Garmin. I have a Fitbit Charge HR, but since we are doing extended hikes and I am swimming now (the Charge HR is not approved for swimming), it is time to upgrade.
I'm fairly certain I don't need one of the solar devices, although the Instinct Solar includes some of the features in the fenix series, but leaves out one thing I don't care about that the fenix offers, music.
Seems like I could get in on some of the advanced fenix features with the less expensive Instinct Solar. Mike
The fenix line are very expensive and I believe they are for serious athletes. I use the Garmin Vivoactive 3 which shows me everything I need to keep fit and healthy.

I hear ya buddy, and agree the human body is a far better indicator of our physical condition than a piece of metal and plastic strapped to my wrist.
The GPS and tracking features are appealing to me for mountaineering and backpacking as well as the cumulative stats it tracks during workouts, then it trends that data into info I can use to improve or modify my workout routines.
We're still planning to summit Mount Rainier in September of 2022, and a triathlon is I'm discussion. I have aspirations to compete in the 2024 Olympics as a swimmer. Yeah, I know, don't laugh though. It'll be a fun goal to set and I want to actually lose in my attempt to try rather than just conclude I am too old (50 now) and not even try.

@MJ5150 I get it. I have used a phone to track my mileage for bike rides before, and found that useful after the fact. For your purposes it totally makes sense. I also know a bunch of people who are counting steps and have seen people look at their watch and then take like 10 steps and then sit back down because they are trying to "stay on track". I have to admit I find this silly.

But in the end, whatever motivates people to move is a good thing, so I just need to get over it!

Quick update, Brace is in and works great, only really noticeable pain is descending stairs and my machine, other than that, I am back at the regular weight training exercise pace before the injury set back. :( gained back 3 lbs sitting on my butt though.
Cardio was my Eplitial machine and weighted stairs climbs, both are out for now, currently added walking, but not the same as pushing myself with the above mentioned :(

Awesome!

When we owned our lake house, I had a 14’ aluminum boat with a 9.8hp two stroke. More often than not, I’d just throw on the oars to go to my favourite fishing hole on the lake. I stored the motor in the shed at the top of the property and it was a long slope down to the lakefront. More effort moving the motor than rowing, if you ask me. I’d put the motor on if it was more than me in the boat or if I went further down the lake than usual.

I’ve been cycling daily again this summer. Not much in the way of road riding since it’s been so hot and humid for weeks on end. So mostly on my mountain bike in the woods around my place. This week I started clearing some old overgrown trails and removing deadfall to add some different options and to make the trails a bit more flowy.

Even though these woods are only a few minutes walk from over 10,000 residents in the immediate area, I rarely see more than a handful of people any time I go out. It’s quite peaceful for being close to downtown. Today I saw nobody out there (mind you, it feels like 97F with the humidity today).

My brother and I spend a lot of weekends at a lake in Wisconsin where the path down to the lake is long and very steep. My bro always uses a trolling motor with a battery so he needs a wheeled cart to haul his heavy load up and down the hill.

I'm like you in thinking that it's easier to row than drag a motor and battery around.

Right now I'm hanging out in an interesting motel in Astoria, Oregon before my mom and I do this

https://www.oldoregon.com/the-great-columbia-crossing-10k/

tomorrow morning. Neither of us have ever done a 10k before, nor have we had any desire to, but this is the one way to walk that bridge. Mom has been diligent about daily walking. I've been less so, but it'll be fine. She may win her age/gender group. I'll be last in mine, likely.

It'll be an adventure! The weather looks snotty but not awful.

Good on ya! Let us know how it goes.

I signed out a bike in Borden, since I'm here for a course. Been raining today but at least it's warm. Gotta love rain, it's people repellant, the trails were empty.

I also "get" more expensive bikes now, it was lighter, you couldn't tell when the bike was going but it's easier to get it moving from a stop. The suspension fork made it easier to deal with bumps that couldn't be avoided. The derailleurs could use some maintenance, but I think I'd rather a friction shifter than the fancy indexed ones either way. Also, less knobby tires just seem to glide on the road.

Moved to a new house this summer, and totally got knocked off track. :(Convenience reigned supreme!

Ive been doing a fair amount of yard work (including reel mowing the 3/4 acre) and riding our new eBikes (yes you still get exercise). But it’s been irregular and diet has been atrocious.

I waited to post until I got a decent amount of progress in, but pleased with what I’ve done so far. I restarted my push-up plan. 3x a week, and have logged 558 since Sept 17 :D

Lately I’ve been adding in squats on the off days too. I love outdoor exercise, but find with weather and scheduling too many days get skipped. What I’m loving about the body weight work is it’s quick, and I can do it anywhere. I think when I’m at 1000 I’ll reassess and maybe find a more well-rounded body weight plan. (open to recommendations - especially apps with tracking!)

Cleaning the diet back up too. Big on the Engine 2 cookbook lately.

Despite what I wrote in post #67 about not getting much out of the Total Gym I'd owned previously, I went ahead and gave one another try. Sold off that Bowflex and used the funds to buy the TG. And this time I absolutely love it.

Keeping my weight around the 205 mark since March, I now have revised my workouts. Cut back on running the treadmill, down to 4 miles/4x week, doing the spin bike every day (one or two 35-minute sessions depending if I ran that day or not), then a few hours later I'll spend 15-20 minutes on the TG. Over the past month that routine has been working well for me. Despite not showing much difference on the scale, I'm feeling better and more enthused than when I was just running for an hour every day. Dang that got old!
