Explain me the 'Fender is God' thing

Ive owned a Fender Strat back when I used to play guitar. I can honestly say I hate Fender to this day. They make decent guitars for the price, but for ultra-premium guitars? keep looking. If it works for the guitarist/bass guitarist in question; good for them. But different strokes for different strokes.

After playing an F-bass, or even my Conklin GT series; I'lll be a dark blizzarding day in hell before I ever buy another Fender. That includes a vast variety of typical guitars as well, not just basses. I've played some boutique Fender basses & guitars, and honestly? For a decent high end guitar I will happily turn my back from Fender each and everytime. There are countless smaller manufacturers out there that are MUCH more capable of making better guitars and basses for the same money, or less then Fenders Custom shop could ever dream of. Unfortunately most people in this thread are too sheepish to find those said company's....and its easier to flock to Fender for Sacrifice anyway in the manner of having decent basses for a decent price.:rollno:

pretty much, yeah...maybe a little in the 60's, too. of course, people have no problem playing 300 year old violins or uprights, but god forbid an electric bass player use something designed 50 years ago.

Yeah...like Hendrix,Clapton,SRV,Gallagher,Guy,Townsend were to sheepish to look for those other builders :rolleyes: On basses Miller,Lee,Jameson,Jaco,Harris they too must be blind to all those great builders. Fender just works for some... they don't for you...so there you go.

The reverse of that woud be saying that good bass guitars were designed in the Nineties (for example) and after.

Say that, and then go and listen to Jaco or Jamerson.

It's true that designs may have changed, but that's not necessarily saying that the new designs are better. And for people who still don't dig Fender basses (as others have said), play something else. Then come and tell us all about it when people are talking about you instead of Jaco or Jamerson.

you can't list jamerson in there...he came along when there was only fender. and gibson. and hofner. and vox. and univox. and kay. and danelectro. and harmony. and teisco. and rickenbacker. and framus. and eko. and mosrite. and...

well, so much for that lame argument the kids always try to pass off.

I think the talking about Jaco or Jamerson has more to do with their playing abilities rather than the actual bass they played. It wouldn't have mattered if they did it all on a cheap POS Hondo, they'd still be getting talked about to this day. Just IMO of course.

Of course you're dead right. That's why "brand" of bass doesn't matter.

I'm not saying Fender is the greatest here - just saying that those who think the make of bass you play is important are totally mssing the point. And they should come and tell us why Fenders aren't great when they're even close to some of the Fender players who've done what they can't even dream of.

In other words - are you Jamerson or Jaco? No? Then stfu about Fenders, your opinion isn't worth ****.

you're right, bill. i see so much revisionist history from the kids on here that its unbelievable, so why should i assume they would read and think before they post?

i think i'll go to amps and argue with kids who think tube amps are only for dirty sounds again ;)

there are sooo many factors into why someone sounds good...from the fingers to the final house mix. Most pros would sound good on any decently made bass through a decent system.

The sad thing is, most music fans could not care less what instrument the bassist is using, or even know the difference.

The only people who care about bass gear are bassists and producers.

Hype goes with being first at producing such an instrument as others have pointed out,quite a simple explanation there.

And yes that Uncle Leo has worked the hoodoo on many rather well ever since ,me included.

I always wanted a Fender when I took up Bass due to the "hype",but they were expensive here in NZ,and as for handmade boutique Bass guitars,I had never seen any at that time,no Internet then.
So my first bass was a Westone ST for a few months(kept it for years),then a Gibson copy of some sorts for a month and hated it,so traded it on an Ibanez SR1000e SGR which I really loved comapred to the first 2, and used for almost a decade but always still wanting a bloody Fender.
Then the drummer gave me a MIM Jazz to try at a practice,I threw that SR1000 promptly in the cupboard and never played it again,ever !
Then finally years later I could afford a MIA Jazz,which I now use.

Now in saying all this I have never played any other basses(other than quick shop demos) aside from my Gretsch Broakaster,so I am possibly missing out on other fantastic basses out there by being sucked into the Fender "hype".
I hope one day I might get another breed of bass to try and who knows,Uncle Leo and all that "hype" might hit the cupboard too :smug:
Until then I am happy with Uncle Leo, his hype and his hoodoo :bassist:
