Was a pet name laid on me in the Army. Everyone in my platoon had one. It's self deprecating and I like being able to laugh at myself... And it gives me a tie back to the guys I spent a big piece of my life with.

So, if you joined in 2004 it had to be under a different name. GoT was not a thing yet in 2004.
. The reason is:
Back in the early 80s, during junior high, Elfquest was the big thing in the group I hung out with. Great graphic novel, still being produced. Skywise was my favorite character, as he was the astronomer of the pack. Couldn't very well take that, so Staredge it was. It was also the first wave of BBS's, so it became my BBS handle. Been that way ever since.

The first books in the Game of Thrones series were released in the mid '90's, so it was a thing before I joined here.....to a few people. Not to the masses that HBO exposed GOT to.
And aye, my original username derives somewhat from The Brady Bunch, though not like you might think. I did grow up watching that show in the '70's.
When I first started playing bass, I was adept at hacking up bass lines and butchering songs, so the name 'Sam The Butcher' got bandied around and stuck, especially whenever I was particularly horrid.
Sam still shows up quite a bit more than I would like.
I thought you were Joe the Bald Guy or something. No?
There's been other threads on this topic before. Mine is more convoluted than interesting... it's my yahoo username/email, which I just plugged in when I signed up for TB because nothing any better occurred to me. As for why it's my yahoo username, I'm a medieval historian and at the time I signed up for Yahoo I was working on my dissertation. "Hrodbert" is an early medieval form of the name "Rupert" and Rupert of Salzburg was an important figure in the dissertation. He became bishop of Salzburg in the year 696. Hence, "hrodbert696."

I was playing a 7 string guitar through 3'x4' pedal board to a Mesa Dual Rec on top of a Marshall 1936 2x12" and Orange 4x12" AND a 100W Mesa MkIII head on top of another Marshall 1936 and Silver Jubilee 4x12". A person came up to me during the set and said "Damn, you have a big tone!" I also like the number 23.

"Arvin" is a persona I adopted years ago in this really pretentious prog-rock band I was in. When the guys would argue about the nuances of chord substitutions or pedal points or the like, I'd lumber into the conversation as "Arvin, the redneck bass player," who would say, "Dangit -- what key are we in? If the song is in "C" Ima gonna play a "C" -- don't need nothin' else!" That usually broke the tension. So the name stuck.
Kind of like Johnny Caravella/Sunshine/Duke/Style/Cool/Midnight/Fever, etc...
Or maybe Heavy Early or Rip Tide...
