No pics on this 'pooter, but I'll get some in the next few days and get them up! I've also got a Stammie 11 in the works due to be completed in "5-8 months" about a month ago...10-11 months to go! Here's the rough sketch of that...for those who care

And As soon as i scrap the cash for some CircleK's I'll be converting my first bass, an old Lyon by Washburn 4 banger, into a Jaquo-Bass: C#-F#-B-E

I am entirely extended range now...or at least out or normal range this realization excites me more than christmas

just kidding, that's a huge difference from a 5 string of a 5ths-tuned 4, but I'm definitely pumped to see this beast of prometeus!

I'm starting to brainstorm for a new custom ERB for the spring, but I'm on the fence between 2 different kinds of instruments.

To give some context, I have a beautiful Stambaugh 6 that I've had for close to 4 years now. It's served as both a great compositional tool, and for just rocking out with.

I'm on the fence between a Charlie Hunter-style 8 string, to give me a more practical combination of highs and lows that I could still use in a live environment, or a 10 or 11 string 'normal' bass. The plus of that is that it's a much more comfortable arrangement of strings and a greater range to work with, but I'd probably only be using it for writing with, or maybe solo tunes. But I have tiny hands, and the likelihood of using a behemoth like that in an energetic live environment is slim-to-none.

Anyone been in a similar boat, or have any thoughts to contribute?

You could tune in fifths for a big range on a manageable neck. Once you're used to it fifths is intuitive and scale / chord patterns logical. When i wanted an ERB, but couldn't afford one, i restrung my 6 string bass in fifths for the range of an 8 string. You only need 7 or 8 strings in fifths for the range of a 10 or 11.

Otherwise, there are indeed ERB players with small hands, it's more a case of technique than hand size.

+1. I have both an 8 and 9 string ERB, both of which are easily played despite having the smallest hands of any man I know.

Here's my 8 string Adler.


This is one of the last basses that Mike Adler started building before he decided to longer build. It set on his bench for a couple of years before his parents sent it to me.


When I got the bass it was just a neck, the body,no pickup routing, a very shallow routed control cavity, no input jack routing, holes for machine heads were drilled.


So I sent it to my friend luthier Marten Keith but he had it for about a year waiting on the Bartolini's and had to make room for his shop and sent it back. about two weeks after I got it I then sent it to luthier Tom Drinkwater of Oakland Axe Factory (Link Removed ) who did all the routing and installed the pickups, then I sent it to Cali and had the pre and piezo pre system installed by a very talented preamp builder who wants to remain anonymous(he said that he doesn't really want people contacting him about building one).
