Extended Range Bass (Club??) Thread

Hey, another New Brunswicker! Cool. :D

Anyway, I'm thinking of re-stringing my old Ibanez SR506 F#-G. I've got all of my high C needs covered on my Stambaugh (and it sounds better in that range than the Ibanez, anyway). I'm using a lot of low notes in my band, so it'll help to have the low F#, maybe, and at the very least, it'll make it easier to reach the strings that I am using.

Thoughts?

What really got me was the size of the cases. I think I recall my drummer's brother's gutiarist having a Washburn Dimebolt with a case about as long and a little wider than my usual bass cases. As we loaded stuff for a gig, I was amazed how heavy the dern thing was. Much heavier than my bass case and about twice as heavy as the regular guitar cases.

I had a white 4 string Jackson concert bass and the case balanced perfectly when the bass wasn't in it. :D

Add the bass and the thing just nose-dived and I had to carry it two-handed most of the time.

Here's the current progress on my Skjold fretless 6:

Should be done in August. I can't wait. :D

Nice to see a new pic of your basses, JT. I love the "melt" on the left in the bottom pic.

thanks chris, and that's quite a sweet bass you got coming there. is it going to have a clear finish?

yeah, i need more, and better, pics of the basses. i'm thinking you mean the bass in the 5 - bass rack, right? that one started out as a fretted with purple heart board, but i had bill make me a new neck on it, to sorta match the fretted neck of my doubleneck. originally it was going to be a fretted too, but then i got the maple-and-wenge melt on ebay and so i told bill to make it fretless. unfortunately it had the slots cut already, so it's lined. not much for lined fretless, tbh - the lines mess with me - but still it sounds fabulous. lane poors are awesome for fretless.

I was thinking the leftmost bass in the individual stand towards the center of the pic-it's the one to the left of the maple/wenge bass. That's one of your older ones, right?

The Skjold will have a trans-red finish on the top, but it won't go all over the body-it'll have a faux-binding effect like this bass. I'm with you on the lines on fretless-I'd rather have it blank. :)

oh, yeah. that's my main fretted, and my 2nd conklin custom, got it in '94. that was the first time he had done a melt on the fingerboard, and it was also the first instrument he made with a 7 pin out for the piezos, to go to a rack unit that controlled the pan and volume for each string. bill dickens ended up getting that too, and only a couple other instruments, as far as i know. that rack unit is sorta cool, the only "conklin" rack unit around. i might end up putting it in my rack, just to have it there :D.
