Exactly, it's a great tool for communication, etc. but they're trying to turn it into something that encompasses your life.

It works for some people, but pushes me away. I only use Facebook nowadays to get people's email addresses and phone numbers when necessary.

Same thing happened with MySpace, same thing will probably happen with Twitter, and whatever else comes around after that. I think that's just the way we are. We find something new, use it up, suck the life out of it, toss it away and move on.

I used facebook for one reason...to try and figure out who the chick I was hitting on at that party is so that I can hit on her again...now that I'm not in college I have no use for FB...It's just annoying, if you want me to come to your party send me a real invitation...and stop inviting me to your goran improv show, I didn't go the last 30 times you invited me, why would I go this time. Also screw you random guy from Michigan, why the hell would I want to be your friend?! You live in Michigan and clearly spend all of your time on the internet.

I also hate all the plug-ins (that was when facebook left their niche and started to decline IMHO)

Also twitter (and its facebook equivalent) is just about the dumbest thing I've ever seen.

I find programmers to be pretty okay with layouts...they are very logical people and understand hierarchy and site structure...just not white space.

The real problem is when board members/executives and other assorted idiots with money start making demands...

I used to work on a college website, our intranet was terrible IMO because the board demanded really stupid useless crap in the main nav, which meant to preserve functionality we had to ad more navigation, and clutter and crap, making the page deeper and harder to navigate.

I'm willing to bet some guy cutting checks is demanding these changes, and that they are ignoring usability studies in order to appease the gods.

Took a look at Twitter a minute ago and read this on the "How" tab:

It sounds like they expect you to be plugged into this site 24/7/365. Set quiet times? Put me in control? Hell, all I have to do is turn it off!

It looks terrible now. All the information is just thrown at you and it's really difficult to distinguish the wall posts from the status updates, etc. You also can't see what your current status is, either. I think they've done this so that people will update their status more often - almost like twitter.

It's honestly awful. I liked the old version much better.
