Hi bass world, I haven't been on for a while,
I'm really wound up about a seller on ebay...this guy has un nerved me before. The issue is I'm always browsing for vintage gear or fixer uppers like most of us do to keep the gear lust happy. I found a hohner jazz bass the other week with easily fixed issues and it turns out to be a real peach with great character...anyway, I digress...
The guy is from Germany, and when browsing vintage bass his listings come up, they are all very noticeable as the main photos are always shot in the same position and same place. I questioned him last year on the price he was charging for an EBO bass body and neck and asked firstly if he was open to offers and if he had any more info or proof of authenticity as it was claimed to be a Gibson but had no headstock logo, or maybe it had one that looked like it had been hacked in with a craft knife, anyway I got a torrent of abuse back. As this bass had been kicking around for years , I thought he might have been open to offers, but no, more verbal abuse, not tge way to deal with a potentially interested customer.
So was browsing last night and his stuff came up as usual, and I was horrified to see a 1974 " fender jazz bass " body up for £550, it wasn't so much the price that got me , I would expect an original to be in the hundreds, it was the shape.
It's a lefty body, the main issue is the horns, they are tapered to short points rather than being longer and rounded off as standard. Also there are no stamps, or any usual markings on the neck pocket which doesn't look like it's been re finnished over the top. It also has a 3rd pickup route added at some point.
I will post screen shots.
Now OK, whoever has routed out the middle cavity for the 3rd pickup may have decided to reduce the horns to points to look like an eb/sg??? And then refinish it in black, but surely this would drastically reduce the value of the body as who would want an original jazz bass body that doesn't look like one??!!
I just doubt the authenticity and the guys attitude is apalling, he has had over 13,000 sales with good feedback , but the odd negative one seems to get the torrent of abuse I got . I've tried reporting questionable items to ebay but that's a waste of time as they only care about their cut.
