There are many great songs listed here but I think some of you are confusing songs that have memorable bass intros or hooks or licks with those that have proper solos

Of course there is some degree of ambiguity but for the most part I would hope that most players could agree what constitutes a bass solo.

Think of the difference you would put forth if the bandleader says "play lick here" rather than "play a solo here"




For my part I'll proffer up 1000 Days in Sodom by Venom, a proto-black metal rocker with an unlikely bass solo starting at 2:00. dig it.

One of my favorite fretless bass rock songs. The riff and the slides are simple but brilliant. The solo is so symmetrical it's like playing math. Very different from anything else Roger Waters ever did. I always wondered if he wrote and played it.

When I saw the thread title, the first song to jump into my mind was "My Generation" by the Who. I've read a couple times that many people credit that song as having the first rock bass solo ever. Who knows.... awesome bass sound, though

That was my first thought as well. Another great Who song that is pretty much all bass is "The Real Me".
Listen to Cream. Jack Bruce has plays amazing bass lines and some solos as well. Duran Duran has some great bass lines. Not really solos, but the bass stands out in a lot of their songs.

I dug yo this thread today, sorry for the zombification, but I was looking for songs to suggest to my band. FWIW, Gilmore played bass on this track, and most of this album.
