Favorite Bass DI?

Hey, thanks for all the responses. Sorry I wasn't a bit more specific in the original post. I'd like to keep it around 150, but I'm perfectly fine with buying used. That brings it down (from your suggestions) to some sort of di only or a Tech 21 of some sort. I think I'm going to go with the tech 21 since I think the preamp will be quite a bit better than the preamp in the joyo American. I'll probably go with the Tech 21 VT Bass DI since that seems to be the closest to my style/genre.

It's also one of the most popular on TB in my opinion. I tried it in the store first (I recommend doing this if you can) and although not for me, it was high quality and I could easily see why others love it.

Does anyone know how it works on guitar? I would like to be able to use it to record guitar as well.
At one time, Ampeg amps were quite popular for guitar. All that late 60's-early 70's Stones stuff like Exile and Sticky Fingers was done using Ampeg guitar amps. A lot of English bands like The Faces, Bad Company, and Mott The Hoople used them. Steve Morse was an Ampeg endorser in his earlier days. But for some reason, over the years they fell out of favor. I think they sound great on guitar myself, and the VT kills with guitar, too.

Evil twin all day long. A bit more than $150 though, and I wouldn't take it on stage.
I use a tonebone or a MXR 81 for live use and they both work fine. If I had to choose one it would be the MXR 81 due to its smaller size.

Don't mean to hijack this thread (if this post is not ok, OP, let me know), but there's something that has been on my mind for quite a while.

I've used the DI out on my amps many years and have always had good, or even very good results, no complaints whatsoever.
On the contrary, I usually get compliments on my tone from most sounds guys. Having a good sounding bass certainly helps. :bassist:

My main amps are the DB 750 and the TH 500, both known for their good DI out.
I have no first hand experience regarding DIs, since my amps have always worked absolutely great, but does an external DI like the Radial JDI, Avalon U5, and the others mentioned in this thread really make such a difference?
Anybody ever a/b'ed those DI boxes with their amp DI out?

I think my main reason for getting something is for the preamp (I think I can do better than my current Joyo American). I have a great tube preamp on my amp head (hartke LH500) but the since the DI out is pre-eq pre-volume, my only toneshaping to the PA is from the American (and my active bass but its eh and when I get my next main bass I want it to be passive). that in mind, i might just end up getting the Tech 21 VT (without the DI) since there's a DI on my amp and its at least a solid 50 dollars less.
