so many variables. What type of music do you play? What type of sound are you wanting?
I ask this, but I seriously doubt you're going to find a consensus here -- there are pros and cons for every brand. You're going to have to try a few before you settle in on your personal fave.
Personally, I use D'addario Chromes for both my fretted and my fretless Jazz. I'm looking to get a P-bass soon and I've got a set of slightly used RotoSound 66s that I'm saving for that.
Recently my favorite round became Circle K strings, over anybody else's nickel or SS.
For a non-round my faves are Smith Compressors and GHS Pressurewounds - identical except for the low B which is a little better - for me anyway - on the Smiths.
D'Addario Pro Steels on my Jazz
D'Addario Chromes on my Precision
Currently using DR Phat Beams on my 5 string Jazz but will using Pro Steels when the time comes for a change.
DR's are an awesome string but I can't afford them any more and the Pro Steels sound pretty awesome as well for $10 less per pack. It's a matter of economics at this point for me.
