Carol Kaye by a country mile. She is a pioneer in the field.

Some good names, but for me Gail Ann Dorsey is on a whole other planet. The Female Nathan East is you ask me...which is creepy becuase they have matching haircuts.

Along the same lines as Kim Deal, Josephine Wiggs is a favorite. That's a pretty recognizable bass line that I'm sure not many know who is playing it. BTW she was a really nice person when I spent about ten minutes talking to her when she was touring with Ultra Vivid Scene.

Carol Kaye is not a great female bassist. She's a great bassist.

She was no doubt a participant and a witness to the creation of a lot of the standards we listen to today.

Two come to mind immediately. Carol Kaye and Tal Wilkenfeld. But, If I have to pick one, it would be Carol. The body of her work exceeds any other bass player I know of, male or female.
