Favorite pre-gig food?

Most of my gigs are not too close to where I live so I'll eat supper at home which usually is a huge plate of macaroni and cheese. Been doing that for years. Helps to settle my stomach and gives me carbs for energy. Then I'll snack on something at the club after the second set, usually pizza if I can time it right with the bartender to have it coming out of the oven as we're just about to come off the stage for the second set. But if we're playing a joint that's got good BBQ, I'll forgo the mac & cheese at home and get to the club an hour or so early to get down on the BBQ. I'll also ask the chef to make up a plate to take home...with extra cole slaw... )-(

Sushi is really the perfect gig food for me. It's got lots of protein and enough carbs to give me energy, but it's light enough so that I don't feel weighed down while I'm trying to play.

I do love Indian food, but I usually feel way too tired after a good Indian meal.

Usually, though, it's whatever the venue provides. Touring the west coast is awesome (gotta love the Red Fox in Eureka, catered with soul food by an ex of Taj Mahal!), lots of fresh, healthy food. The midwest can be difficult. Good nutrition is such an important thing when on the road for weeks. It's easy to get caught in the trap of eating crappy food, drinking a lot, not sleeping, etc.

I usually bring food on the road and visit health food stores whenever possible. I keep a stock of apples and oranges and fresh vegetables. It can really make a difference in mood to have some fresh fruit and vegetables every day. I avoid diners as much as possible, as greasy food day after day is a serious health risk.

But, yeah, sushi rocks!

PS Gotta love playing those ribfests in Chicago!
