I'm sure these guys couldn't care less about definitions and semantics when they're churning out some of the most rocking raw stuff in decades.

From what I see here "Rock" means everything that isn't Jazz or Classical. Which mean it incompass folk, country, punk, grunge, pop, rap, hiphop, new age, metal and all the subgenres, disco, motown, dance, electronic...etc it becomes stupid
From this thread everything in those two clip are under the "rock" umbrella ...
You still haven't said what you define rock as. Elvis? The Stones? Korn? Give a band name or something. Like I said before, I'm 43. 1974. Ever since that day rock I've known rock as a huge umbrella. I don't know when that changed. Or why it's such a big deal if it encompasses large amounts of music. Personally I think all these subgenres are a little stupid. Why quibble over whether The Cranberries are rock, or whether they are Euro-grunge post rock folk? Does this really matter?
And what makes Queen, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and Elvis, which are all insanely different, "real" rock aside from airtime on classic rock radio stations?
So rock's defining trait is...? Because those band have little in common. The grunge bands have more in common with LZ then LZ has with Elvis. Queen was all over the place.
Great, so let's mention Opeth, and lump them in with those great bands he mentioned. Respect to Black Sabbath and Metallica....to give the metal guys their due. Then, just let's leave it there. Take your power chords....just take any note you like, and add a fifth interval.....and piss off !!
Well, I guess you told me. Although Black Sabbath was just considered rock before somebody slapped a label on them but oh well.

Damn, I must really be stuck in a time warp. The overwhelming majority of music I listen to on a daily basis is 70's/80's metal/hard rock. Maiden, Sabbath, Crue, Cinderella, Dio, Ozzy, Yngwie.
Although some of the aforementioned bands are still kicking and have produced albums through the 90's and 00's, I'm racking my brain trying to come up with even ONE post-1990 band that I like enough to buy a CD...

Yah, I'm a big Collective Soul fan. And the Dosage Album is probably my favorite. I'll add this tune that for reasons unexplained to me, always makes me feel good..
