Grunge isn't rock ... punk isn't rock etc or shag every label and everything is rock

We need a separate thread on FOO FIGHTERS and TOOL.

What did I miss? I've listened to hours of their music and played their songs on bass, and I just don't get it. They both seem "OK" to me.

I would probably give $100 to the first person who could enlighten me on either band. No, I'm not a huge metal fan, and no....I cannot name the current bass player of Foo Fighters. Perhaps I am flawed.....

This is inspired from Joe Nerve's thread about the definition of rock and roll. Lot of great bands in that thread but let's face it as far as bands go it's the usual suspects. Rather than argue with people who insist newer music can't be any good I figured to just start another thread.

I'll mention the band I brought up in that thread. The Dead Weather. I love how prominent the bass is in that band and how Jack Lawrence uses effects. Allison Mosshart leaves it all on the stage too. Jack White is a much better drummer than guitar player IMO.

Definitely like QOTSA and Them Crooked Vultures. John Paul Jones proving that you don't have to stop exploring music after the 70s.

I know people scoff but I've always thought Kings of Leon was a great little southern rock band, although with a tendency to release the worst songs on their albums as singles.

I'm not sure if you're being serious, but of course he does. In fact, I think most RATM and Audioslave songs have some kind of guitar riff (often more than one) at different parts of the song.

But the point with Morello is that he likes to get creative and push boundaries, and even when making "just cool noises", he does it with some pretty good taste. I don't think some of those cool noises are that easy to achieve.

Yes I am serious. After the first album I felt his playing became a bloviated, pretentious mess of sounds, noises and an otherwise indistinguishable cacophony designed not to be musical but to be an example of guitar wankery that did nothing to support the song at hand. Id rather play behind an Ace Frehley orKeith Richards style of player who puts the song first. Morello plays like he's auditioning for the acrobats job at the circus.

Maybe I've been listening to too much Autechre... but I don't consider Morello non-musical.

I think he's quite good. I wasn't all that crazy about RATM, but the whole point of that band was him mimicking what DJ's were doing and incorporating that into rock music. It served the song, because it was the whole point of the songs in the first place. Aside from the political lyrics of course.


His stuff in Audioslave is very underrated IMO. Some serious riffs and some very good leads while he was in that band.

I guess it depends what we are talking about here. If we mean "rock" in the "not extreme" way, I'd say Tool and STP.
If we mean in the broadest sense of rock as a genre, now we are talking.
