Jason [originally listed as Jerry] Scheff on a live TV broadcast I heard of Chicago years and years ago. I don't know what was going to the airwaves that I actually heard, but it was a Lakland 494 through and Eden head and D410XLT.

Willie Weeks' sound both on the indispensible live Donny Hathaway album and on the John Scofield tribute to Ray Charles.

Francois Mongrain on Martyr's "Feeding the Abscess", I think a lot of it has to do with how all the instruments sound on the album. It's death metal, but everything sounds good and is fairly easily distinguishible from everything else (even both guitars). Still, I love the way his bass sounds on that album.

I'm kind of a metal guy but I have always enjoyed Adam Clayton's (U2) bass tone. I'm not a Chili's fan but Flea on BSSM was great. Brian Bromburgs (sp?) tribute to Jaco was really nice. Justin Chancellor on 10,000 Days was real nice and refreshing (there are so many recordings where the bass is buried behind the guitar and it is nice to hear the bass outfront needless to say decent tone).

Glad to see Jack Casady and JJ Burnel gettin' some love. Though they sound nothing like each other, each has a great tone. Both were big influences on me when I was starting out.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned Bruce Thomas (Elvis Costello and the Attractions). I love how his bass is always up front in the mix, and his tone is pure P-bass goodness.
