This all makes sense and I thank you Frank.

I do not think that I own another compressor whose threshold range is starts and finishes so low. Even with the variation as per ratio. Not that it's a problem - but it definitely explains why I found the Opti-Fet to be so aggressive.

The Opti-FET and DE-CL were designed with much wider threshold range than the Dual-Band compressor… -47dBu for the Opti and DE-CL vs -37dBu DB-CL. Also, the ratios for the Opti and DE-CL can go much higher than the Dual-Band, 20:1 vs 7:1.

The Opti-FET was designed so that it could be use as a gentle compressor or have the ability to be a more extreme squish box. The compressor circuit in the DE-CL was taken from the Opti-FET and a specialized limiter circuit was married up with it… that’s why they share similar numbers.

I looked at the settings that I have been using on my Opti-FET. I use it more as a polite compressor with a quick release and the attack pulled back just a bit.

RATIO 9:00
ATTACK 10:00
RELEASE (min) 7:00
I adjust the threshold so that the LED is lit for about half of the time the note is ringing out.

I also use the side-chain EQ with bass pulled back a bit. Turning up/down the EQ controls will modify the threshold level for those frequencies. With me turning down the LOW EQ, I am making the compressor less sensitive to the low frequencies and it allows for more bass energy to pass without working the compressor as much.

LOW 9:00
MID 12:00
HIGH 12:00

I think these setting should get you close to what you are looking for.

There's a need in the market place for a really responsive dynamic overdrive pedal. One which responds to playing levels as opposed to being a blended signal. In a simular way that an envelope filter gets triggered by the player digging in...the dirt could go from completely clean to really dirty as the player digs in.

I think the Bixonic Expandora does something like this with an envelope control circuit.

Received my shiny new DE-CL. Still trying to get the threshold right, but so far enjoying it.

Hopefully the discussion above will help you as it sounds like the DE-CL and Opti-Fet operate in similar ranges. Did a huge amount for me and I can not thank Frank @boomertech enough. One of my favorite things about this site is how it can put us in easy and relaxed direct contact with the manufacturers of our gear.

If you are finding the threshold adjustments to be too sensitive on the DE-CL, then you can adjust the sensitivity trimmer inside. That trimmer allows you to change the range for both thresholds. The trimmer has a 20dB range so a little adjustment can make a drastic change. You will need to be careful with that trimmer because it is very tiny and fragile.

Is there a trimmer in the Opti-Fet as well? If ever....

There is no trimmer inside the Opti-FET, but you can somewhat use the EQ to achieve a similar result. Here are the graphs for the frequencies and range for each EQ control.

Those mids look quite low for bass. 250hz is right at the bottom bracket for mids. Usual we see mids around 650-850hz region. Treble at 10Khz is pretty high.

I chose those EQ points with a lower Q for wide coverage... I spent a week tweaking Q's and frequencies until I found the most useful combination for what I liked with my basses and guitars.

The EQ is ONLY for the compression detector circuit. This EQ will not be affecting the audio like you normally would use EQ, it only modifies the threshold sensitivity within those frequency bands. If you want other EQ points, the Opti-FET has side-chain loop jacks so you could insert any EQ that you desire.

Hi Frank - I tried these settings at a rehearsal yesterday and the comp really came to life. It is exactly what I am looking for. Thank you again for taking the time to explain your settings to me.

How can I order (or request about the wait time)? The website only says 'temp. out of stock'...

Add your name to the waiting list, when your name comes up you get an opportunity to buy if you respond with payment in x amount of time.

The waits are getting a lot shorter on most of the comps. My Opti-Fet came up in about 6-8 weeks. But that was a bit of an aberration.
