fEARful™ Part Eleven (11)

Well, I would not use the fEARful all the time with the Schroeder. I would keep one and the other at 2 locations and if the need comes, would use both for a super large gig. And that should not be that often.

So then... it would be fine?

You really have to define 'fine'.

Can you do it? Yes. Will it sound good? I don't think so. And yes, I own both fEARful cabs and a Schroeder 1212. What are you going to get? Who knows. You're probably looking at an unbalanced mess. The Schroeder is very very loud in the mids and not in the lows/highs. I would think you'd lose clarity and balance in tone.

Agreed. The schroeder will dominate the tone because the low-mids are so extreme.

If you check my profile you'll see I've owned a number of schroeders. They are great for what they do, but ultimately I got tired of having no full, deep bass. The 15/6 I have now is miles better.

Just throwing this out there. Since the Schroeders are mid heavy and light in the low end, possibly a fEARful 15 (or 12) sub would add some strong low end to your rig. That would eliminate the mid issue.

Although, personally I'd just use the fEARful by itself.

Hi Guys;

Ok, I have the 15/6 box built. I've been ordering other parts. Hardware etc. As far as the connectors go,. I would like to use speakon for bi-amp operation from my GK2001RB. Does anyone know about the wiring for this? Not sure what to get or how to wire these connectors. I know they are 4 wire tho but that's about it. I think I could figure it out but thought I'd ask you guys who know. Also looks like the kappalite 3015lf is going for about $229 right now. Not sure about availability but it seems like they have them. Do I need to do anything different about the crossovers when bi-amping? I know, too many questions, too little time...:) Thanx for any help.......

From the manual:

GK Speakon Cable
1+ 540W Amp +
1- 540W Amp -
2+ 50W Amp +
2- 50W Amp -

Which is what I figured, and what is the most logical way. 4 pole speakon jack on your cab, with the 1+/1- wired to the 3015LF and the 2+/2- wired to the lil' guy.

The GK biamp system just uses a four pole speakon connector. If you get those you would just wire the tweeter to the +2,-2 wires and away you go. The Low and Mid crossover system would be unchanged off of +1, -1.

Unless you were talking about bi-amping the 6" off of the high pass portion too. I have no idea how that would work with GKs 50w high-pass section.

Edit: You might have read about people bi-amping each separate speaker, but they are using active crossovers and dedicated amp channels for each speaker. In that case the speakers are directly wired, each to their own connection point, without any internal crossover.

You'll need a four wire speakon cable, I got one from Parts Express, 5' 12GA, made by Peavey for about $35. All made up and ready to go.

It was backordered, so while I was waiting I ran one speakon cable wired on the #1 poles to the main cab, and another on the #2 poles to the horn. Here's a picture!

Label the two cables to prevent confusion, not that they would do any damage, they can't hook up wrong.

You could make up your own cable to save a couple bucks.

Wow,...u guys are quick! Thanx guys,...I apreciate your help very much. Cables I have because I use them now for use with my GK NEO 2/12 II's......just needed to make sure I make the right connections at the box....basically I want to have 2 speakon connectors so I can daisy chain later/possibly. By any chance would bi-amping with the GK limit the power to the mid? I'm not running a horn in my cab....

Sometimes things can get muddled here on TB.

I looked at the specs on both GK amps, the 1001 rb 2 and the 2001 rb 2.

If you are not installing a horn, the biamp section of the GK will not used. That part of the amp only supplies frequencies over 5K. IF you want to see what the high section of the GK can do for you, order up the compression driver and the wave guide, they cost less than $40. Wire the horn to the #2 poles, use your GK cable, and you are done. The horn is independent and controlled with the tweeter knob on the front of the GK.

You'll run the low section, into the 15/6 where the CBG crossover will do a spiffy job of routing tons of power at the appropriate frequencies to the 3015LF and the 18 sound mid. With the power combinations the 2001 offers you should have plenty of power, sick amounts of power, or maybe you would go all out and build a pair of 15/6's one for the right side, one for the left.

You don't need any further crossover to do a horn with the GK, so it's pretty cheap entertainment. I put one in just because I wanted to do something with the GK's high side. It's cool, I like it, but I could live without it. If you play acoustic or EUB I would put it in. The problem is that run this way the horn relies totally on the GK's set up. If you want to use the fEarful as a PA or monitor and you don't power it with the GK the horn is not going to work. (without some other power source)

There, clear as mud now, isn't it?

Go ahead, mix and match. You will hear right away why you don't need that extra cab.

Anybody who is willing to build a fEarful has a streak of "Hey, what happens if I do this?" going on.

I tried it with the 15/6/1 and a TL 606/3015. One less cab to carry around.
