Fearful Part 14: one better than 13!

Just back from audition/rehearsal with my new band. 3 hours in the studio, vox, guitar, and a laptop. guitar was going through the blown PA. think industrial/metal ala Manson/Zombie/Static-X. i ran my 15/6 composite Arnopol build with my Nash PB63 and Mesa M6. we were loud, but not stupid earplug loud.

i first set the amp for boosted mids, out of habit with other cabs and bands. i found that i needed to go to the most extreme mid-cut setting and roll off the tone knob to get me where i wanted (clean, but dark and smooth sound). gain at noon, bass pushed in and at noon, mids rolled back slightly, treble at noon, master at nine o'clock. the sound out of this thing was silly. it was clear and defined and loud. the bass was strong, but not anywhere near fart or wool.

i found the hissing i noticed (mentioned earlier) was not noticeable, unless you listened for it and all other instruments were silent.

my only concern is that there were some weird buzzes and rattles. i couldn't tell if it was the zippers on my rack-bag, or the grille on the backline cab behind my fEARful, or the creaky stage boards (raised floor in an old, worn studio), or if it was my cab. there was definitely some grille buzz going on (also mentioned earlier). but i had to push it and hit certain notes to make it jump. i also found the sound got weird when i pushed the volume. i had a hard time telling what was the mystery rattle(s) and what might have been cab noise, and what was distortion and my bass knob needing to come down. i had some solo time to tweak things, and it was hard to hunt it down with certainty. out of curiosity, i pushed the master to noon, and things got worse, so i gave up on that idea.

i need to try the cab again in a better room, with a solid floor. i also want to check the screws to see if the vibrated loose. overall, i'm pleased with the sound i got. i'm thinking i'll go for a Puma 900 to mate up, to get a super clean, flat sound.

lifting this thing was a joke. my singer helped me with it, and he one-hand carried it. i'm almsot thinking i could have gone for a 12/6 for even easier loading, and still had enough volume for my needs, but i opted for the 15/6 knowing i was getting some "just in case" extra boom.

overall, i'm happy. i want a few more "loud" swings at it in other rooms before i feel i can speek honestly about how it handles. but, i'm clearly on the right path.

The "all done excpet for some finishing touches" update.

Hey guys....WE GOT IT ALL WIRED YESTERDAY!!!!.......AND IT ALL WORKS!!!!!

Sweeeeeeeeeet.

I had a few questions I had to ask at the fEARful forum. They were all answered with great speed and accuracy. A HUGE thanks to all the people on that forum. I had to slightly more knowledgable than me friends to help, but I'm confident that, with that forum's help, I could have handled it on my own.

We got all of the wiring done. I was warming up the speakers last night and everything functioned the way it should. Didn't crank anything up so I haven't fully tested it...and one of my tubes in the my Mesa Strategy 400 is rattling...so I need to get that fixed before I really know how clean it is. But it was sounding pretty awesome. Insanely light for the monstrosity of two 15/6s.

We had to get out a planer to level the grille bracing a bit. Once that was done we brad nailed the bracing in. We had the pressure up too high so there's one or two spots I need to duratex where the nail is ever so slightly showing. I didn't have enough gasket for the grilles....so I need more gasket and then I can screw that. Yeah. And then paint the screws because I couldn't find black ones.

And then this thing is complete. So no glamor shots. But here's the rough shot.

Congrats Man!!Trust me them 2 15/6 cabs will kill any Marshall stack out there...Cant wait to hear your review after you get a chance to crank it up!! On a side note....it looks like that amp you have on top weighs more then both them speakers :p....man thats a monster:eek: Bet she sound great though!! Enjoy man and Rock on:bassist: Cheers~Elliot

I'm with you. Monster. These things are SO ******* LOUD and have so much low end....it's like the entire house is rattling. I think there's a screw or two rattling on the cab (I think it's coming from one of the rubber corner pieces....crazy) but I have a tube in my Mesa that is rattling non stop and it shakes everything around it to such an extent that I can't localize it (having a cranky preggo wife doesn't help much, either ;) )

All in all. The things are amazing. I mean....yeah it's hard to localize the rattle....but that's how much low end there is. Holy ****.

I'm not too worried about it. I'll find it and fix it.

MSU, are you still running the Thumpinator? In another thread, Pickles asked if anyone was running one with a fEARful. If you are, can you shed some light on how well it works, or if it does little at all? I'm contemplating one, or the HPF made by fdeck, to tame the M6 low end. Ken is a big believer in the HPF, and that the M6 is notoriously untamed, so it might be fun to try a filter, even just for academic reasons.

MT,
Are you aware that Francis is currently testing/prototyping a HPF for electric bass guitar in cooperation with greenboy that should end up being a great match to fEARful cabs? It should be aurally 'invisible' while removing potentially harmful or headroom robbing subsonics when running big power.

LOL Be careful with that....I am sure you could induce labor on your wife if you not careful
Yeah I know what you mean by Rattling!! The first Time i plugged into my 15/6/1 it was Holy**** That thing was CRAZY..... everything seamed to rattle.... I had never Heard Such Clean Low notes coming out of a cab like that before!! And then I plugged into my 1515/66/1 and the Whole House left Shaking and stuff actually falling off the bookshelf .... I was Left Speechless.....I am to Scared to hook both the 15/6/1 and the "66" up at the same time to my Carvin B2000!! At just around 1700 watts...I am not sure my insurance would cover the damages incurred by such an adventure...:hiding: ether way i am going to do it one day just to say i did it and Lived...well at least i hope i will of lived...lol!!.....Oh Enjoy man....Your days of Commercial Cab GAS and GONE!!!....Welcome to a Whole New World of AWESOME!!! Cheers Mate!!~Elliot

Ha. I used to see comments like that and laugh at the hyperbole....but now it's like....really.

So the Thumpinator.....I got rid of the Thumpinator....kinda....well....I just think they're pointless. A lot of amps already do half of what it does....I dunno...and I could have sworn I read something from Greenboy saying it's even less needed with fEARful cabs. I mean....I'm being nice....but I just don't understand how a volume cut costs that much....I mean...it's a buffer....that cuts your volume.

I kinda feel stupid I ever bought into it. If someone sold them for $20, I might jump on one....but even if they were at $50 I would have to really think about it....or find a coupon or something.

Funny you should say that cause i was the same way at one point....I just could not believe that a single 15 could do the same as my 410......Fast forward a year latter and side my Side My 15/6/1 not only can do the same thing as my 410....But it Kicks The Crap out of it...I have not used my 410 since that day...Which reminds me i really need to put it up forsale before the spiders make a permanent home out of it!!:scowl:

I've actually tried Fdeck's new prototype. It really works. I just played a loud gig with an 8 and an 88. Sounded great. With the HPF in place even though i was really cutting stuff below 40---the B string tightened up and had more focus and authority. Really opens up the sound because it removes the subsonics that you don't need---it's the subsonics that your amp and speaker are using all of their resources to reproduce. Even with a Fearful it improves things. My 3 8's went a LOT louder with the HPF. A bigass speaker like a fearful will have more authority and a more open sound. Honest.
