Fearful Part 14: one better than 13!

Damn.

My first chance to REALLY test these guys out at practice tonight....things were going great and then about 40 minutes in I start getting this farting sound on my B string. I notice that it's coming out of both cabs, though....I would shut one of the amps channels off and both cabs were doing the exact same thing....I would turn the volume down WAY low and it would still do it. That's making me think it's my amp and not the speakers that's having the issue.....so I shut off my amp. I play on a Mesa Boogie 400 Strategy Power Amp and an Ashly SC-40 Preamp.

I turn it on 15 minutes later and everything is fine. About 15 minutes after that, it starts happening, again. So I'm pretty sure it's the amp and not the speakers. Just sucks I didn't get to do a full run through on the cabs.

From that first part where everything was working, I would say that one 15/6 is louder than a 410....barely. Kinda sucks because it's just not loud enough where I could get away with only one. But with two I have way more volume than I need. I probably could have gone with two 12/6s but they were practically the same price. Ah well. First World problems. Taking the amp to the shop, tomorrow. Hopefully it's out soon.

Farting out how, and was it the mids or the woofers? Remember I had a crackling going on in my mids on my 66. Turned out to be a lose wire in my X-over. Istill think I have a questionable solder in there somewhere. Every one in a while the mids will pop, but only at extreme volumes when things are really shaking.

It was like the whole note would be a really distorted "wrar" sound. Only on low B string stuff. All of my pedals were off at the time.

I had this same problem, but I play a 4. At any volume louder than bedroom practice, every note would make that "wrar sound." I wasn't positive if it was coming out of only the mid or the mid and the woof.

Turns out I had a coil wired incorrectly on my mid xover...totally my fault. Fixed that and the problem went away. Check your xovers.

Was it consistant, or every once in a while at louder volumes? My mids would crap out only on low C# for some reason.

Well I found out this in the Mesa 400 thread:

From Manual: INPUT CIRCUITRY
The Strategy 400 Stereo offers extremely sensitive input circuitry: 0.2 volts will produce full
power when the Level control is turned fully up. This means you can actually plug in many
signal sources directly without needing a preamplifier. The output from virtually any effect
unit is strong enough -- as is any keyboard, CD player, cassette deck... even electric bass
plugged in direct produces full power with incredible tone. Electric guitar needs more tone
shaping to sound right but can still be plugged in direct for testing purposes. When using the
Strategy with a preamp you should turn down the Level controls for best signal-to-noise
performance and easy controllability from the preamp knobs. With the MESA/Boogie Quad
preamp, settings from 2 to 5 are recommended for the Strategy Level controls. With the
Level set at 7, input sensitivity is reduced to 1 volt for full power out. With the Level at 6, 2
volts are needed; and at 5, 3 volts of signal deliver full power. Input impedance of each
channel is 75K ohms which becomes 37.5K when using the Parallel Input jack, still high
enough to be perfectly compatible with virtually any signal source.

I'm using a preamp and was running both channels closer to 7 or 8. So I'm thinking I was overusing the poweramp and it was over heating. Stop me if that sounds stupid.

Howdy, folks. I'm doing a feature store on the 'fEARful phenomenon' in our upcoming issue of Bass Gear Magazine. As many of you know, I have a couple of fEARful cabs of my own, but for this story, I'd like to feature photos of different models and also photos showing how different individuals have tricked out their fEARfuls. Finished product shots, build progress shots, gig shots, are all welcome. I make no promise that I will use each and every shot, but I will try to show a nice cross-section. Higher resolution pics are appreciated, but not absolutely necessary.

Please note, if you agree to send us a pic, then you would also be agreeing to let us use your photo in our publication and are thereby potentially giving up some of your intellectual property rights in these photos. If, after all that, you are still willing to submit your photo(s), please send them to tom at bassgearmag.com.

Thanks! :hyper:

Tom.

Hey Tom, feel free to use mine if you want... 15/6+15sub

Unfortunately, its slightly obscured. :(

Luckily, its obscured by a matching bass. :)

Tom,
FWIW, Burningskies's picture is the de facto standard fEARful photo to which we all aspire.;)

Thanks Mr. Pickles. :) I'm happy that my picture and speakers could help encourage others not only to build/buy fEARful cabs but also to tempt them to make something other than a black box!

For anyone who wants a very similar shot, it was done with an older Canon DSLR, kit lens and no flash. The trick is to not mind getting on your belly to take a picture!
