Fearful Part 14: one better than 13!

When I had my 400+, I found myself bringing my old Hartke 3500 to gigs...then I also realized I liked the way it sounded better too, and wasn't turning my back to the audience and turning knobs every song or so.

I've really enjoyed a lightweight portable amp in a 4-space or less rack, coming in under 20lbs. Fits in any car, and light enough to grab stuff with your other hand on load in. On stage, I've not turned to adjust the Kern since I got it...its been pretty plug and play.

Yeah. I'm for sure a GK kinda guy. I think this is my last purchase for myself for a VERY long time....and I have the funds from selling the 15/6, a few high end pedals, and the Mesa 400+ (when I pull the trigger). I mean.....12 or so years ago I pulled the trigger on a Status S2-Classic and it has cured my bass GAS ever since. Totally vanished. I guess that's what I'm hoping to find. The amp equivalent of my Status. Something I can say "my rig is complete, my GAS is forever gone" with. I know that's asking a lot. I also know I love the Hartke and GK stuff.....but my eyes are big......

Or this could be just me rebelling against the fact that my playing days are numbered..... :scowl:

The preamp/poweramp idea is a great one....but I think I need something more simple....I dunno. Man....I really wish that Baer Valkyrie was out or soming soon. That thing sounds perfect.

Or hold out for the GK Fusion 800?

Byoung - I want that bass! Tell me about it, please. Well, to be honest, I wouldn't mind having the cab, too. I will continue saving pennies.

It's the Invalid Link Removed.

Wanting a poor man's phenolic fretless (phenolic only used on cheap and expensive basses), I de-fretted it. This fulfilled one of my hobbies: huffing superglue.

I still haven't really finished it (it still needs a little leveling, and then it needs to be polished), but it plays pretty nice.

I got to try out a pair of Mark's (dukeorock) BNA/ fEARful cabs over the weekend. I loved every minute with them and wanted to give Mark and Dave (greenboy) a shout-out, a huge thanks, and my highest recommendation on their fantastic speaker cabinets.

First off, a quick word about my set-up and preferences. I played a Lakland 55-02 into a Mesa Walkabout and Genz Benz Streamliner 900 heads into the BNA Audio/ FEARful 12/6/1 cab for back-to-back gigs in Nashville last weekend. I also spent about 3 minutes playing the Walkabout through a 15/6/1 cab. My strings were one week old D'addario XL nickles that were much wiser than their age would indicate from having been played at a 2 hour outdoor gig in humid, 95 degree weather a few days prior. I do wish I would have had a fresher set of stainless or alloy strings on for my trial run.

I also do not prefer an extremely clean, "modern" tone. That should be somewhat obvious with my bass/ amp choices. I don't gravitate towards gear that people would describe as "not adding color" to your bass's "natural" tone (with the exception of Aero single coil pickups, which I love). I want there to be some color and personality in there, I just want to be able to manipulate it effectively. And this speaker cab seemed to respond to EQ adjustments better than anything I've ever tried out. I'm not trying to say this cab won't work for those seeking a super clean tone. I think it would most likely work phenomenally well for that purpose. It's just not what I go for with my set-up. If I wanted that upper midrange to bark and snap out, I could dial that in. If I wanted a dub style scoop, I could dial that in (the combo with my Streamliner and this cab can work ridiculously well for that purpose). I'm sure the 15/6/1 could rattle your insides even more, but I was extremely limited in my time with that cab and dug the 12/6/1 with the Walkabout a bit more when I plugged in. I didn't have much time to get a sound on Sunday, so I went with that combo.

Both cabs can also absolutely wallop you with air. Even with the scant 175 watts the Walkabout was putting out at 8 ohms. I can't imagine what something like a 400+ or my old Trace Head could have done through this cab. You could probably literally blow open the doors out of the back of a club with them. It's just an awesome feeling to be standing in front of these things. I highly recommend experiencing it for yourself. For me, this is the type of experience that is one of the great joys of being a bass player. I can't imagine what the 12/6/1 would sound like along with a 15 sub. It would just be crushing.

Finally, the crossovers in them just seem so well matched for the components. I got zero hiss out of the tweeter, and the extension from 12 to 6 to tweeter was seamless. I was initially planning on ordering a cab without a tweeter, as I've found them to add an airy, stratrospheric-type level that sits far too above everything else coming out of the cab. But all of the components in this cab just worked SO WELL together. I loved everything about it.

I'm going to be picking up the 12/6/1 cube from Mark at BNA and can not wait to get some more time in with it at rehearsals and shows. I'll also be saving my pennies for the 15 sub to put underneath the 12 for bigger shows. Awesome job guys, and thanks again!

Thanks for the kind words, Jason!

To everyone else...what Jason ain't saying is he's a very gifted bassist. Killer right dynamics, great chops, but never too "look at me!!!" he plays for a fantastic singer/writer named Evan Bliss. I highly recommend their music to anyone who love well written and performed rock/pop.

Evan's drummer Jeff also has a FANTASTIC side band called Second Self. If you ever wondered what it would be like to combine prog, surf/spaghetti western, fusion and dub influences into one energetic trio...these boys are the real deal.

So the good news is- BNA has sold another awesome cab.

The bad news- I want a Streamliner900 more than ever!

Hope to see you in Belgium, Jason!

That's a beautiful song; great writing, blend, movement, and dynamics. I'll have to get that in my collection. Yes, the STM900 is good with those woofer/mid driver cabs. Smooth but articulate tone with heft which feels nice under your fingers.

Peavey IPR 1600 and your choice of pre amp. Gives you the versatility of changing your mind due to tonal goals down the road. I have been digging my ART but I would love to take an SVP, Aguilar, Monique, Kern, or any number of really cool pre-amps for a spin. The nice thing is you can sort the power section out, and then start to worry about a Pre as your tonal goals change.

+1 on the power/pre

MSU, you can get a 1K+ power amp new with warranty for around $300. A good quality pre used is $2-300. I'm on my 5th pre in the last year. It's been fun to see what each brings to the table. I'm using a GK 2001RBP now. Which is funny because the last amp I used was a GK700RB-II. Each pre I sold more or less paid for the new one. Like you I know how money can get tight with multiples.:D If you don't want to deal with the power/pre set-up I don't think you can go wrong with a 700 or 1001RB-II.

If I remember correctly from the early days, people were using rubber tubing (or appropriately sized rubber feet) as additional standoffs close to the woofers .

Yep. Reliable sells big long pieces of heavy duty tubing you can cut as needed. They used to include a piece with each grill order, dunno if they still do or not.

They actually sell "standoff kits" that have the heavy duty rubber tubing and cool hefty black screws. I used one for additional grill support on my 15sub.

Yep, they are the ones that Dave put on my cab. Those three stand offs keep my grill from rattling regardless of how loud I go. Now everything else around me rattling is a different story. The cab does uncover a lot of structure rattles in the house we practice in.

Thanks guys. This is stuff I should have tackled a LONG time ago. But I think I'll try out the kit reliable sells. Looks pretty good.

Also....I was getting some rattling from inside...coming from the ports....I reached up inside it and found it was vibrating where the wire connected to the PC board. I asked my friend how much soldering he did (like how heavy it was) and he said "none...I just used spades and crimps"......

That's not too good, eh? He told me he'd help me open her back up and solder everything...after some teeth pulling.

Thanks, my man. I got a response back from Roger and he told me the Baer Valkyrie should be hitting the street late this year....I think I'm going to hold off for that guy. It speaks to me. :bassist:

I use the rubber standoffs only. I'm going to put the wood standoffs around the borders for better support. Soon.

And one of these days I want to get either the Baer or the Monique and a power amp. Just dreaming...
