Fearful Part 14: one better than 13!

...and I have a meeting set up Saturday to test a 12/6. he wants to test drive my Dingwall ABZ5, and I want to check out his cab, and he is less than an hour away from me. sounds like fun!

Sounds like you are both going to end up with the "I wants"!

When I hooked up the 15/6/1 for the first time, I finally heard what my GK and Dingwall could do. That's what a B string is supposed to sound like, that's how those low notes feel!

Anyone use a tube head with their fEARful? I'm making a trade this afternoon- a cab for a tube head and cab, so I'll know soon enough how it sounds, but I've read on TB that tube heads like sealed cabs more than vented/ ported cabs... any experience?

Does anyone know if there is a thread that details when and where people will be out playing fEARfuls? It might be a nice resource for people on the fence about building or buying. If not, I may start one... anyone know the right forum for something like this?

There is this thread on the fEARful forum [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] but no one has posted in it since early August.

theres my build thread. I built them to use with my SVT.

To get them closer to sealed cabs, i extended the port shelf on each cab by 3 inches, as greenboy suggests for higher roll off and deeper lows.

I'm a total fEARful convert, so, glowing review all around.

Oh man. I just tried a 12/6 cube owned by a local. Ran the Dingwall into my M6, and also tried the owner's Carvin BX1500. Dang.

The tweeter was not needed at all for bass guitar, but it sounded great playing an iPod into the 12/6 using the tweeter. The wooden cube was a touch heavy for me (estimated round 45 lbs). I think a composite 15/6 could be light enough for me.

Now I need to see if I can dial in the things I liked with my current rig by tweaking the EQ, while the sounds are still fresh. If I can't get close, it may be GAS time.

Monster, I'm in Woodland Hills (91367), but if you want to check out my 15/6/1 and Streamliner for comparison, send me a PM and we can set something up.

I'm trying to dial in a tone similar to the things I liked about the fEARful I just played, and it isn't easy. MY PH115 and Markbass 604 feel 2-d vs. the 3-d feel of the fearful. Some of that is the room. I played the fEARful in a small theater which had a bit of echo and space, and the others are in my living room. However, the tone knob on my Dingwall felt more useable on the fEARful, going from smooth and dark to sparkly and bright. On my other cabs, it goes from dull to honky/nasal.

To be fair, the form factor of the Markbass 604 is a clear winner. Since I'm looking for small and light, that makes it harder to call an overall winner in my mind. Good sound and great form or good form and great sound. I've made this call before with necks on basses. Obviously, what is heard is paramount. But it only matters if you can get it to the venue.

Not sure on the regular 12/6. The 604 is 33lbs and a 17" cube, so a single top handle works for it, but the 12/6 I played was too heavy for me with a single top. Two sides might have been better. I'd go with the composite cab from Mike, which world be better. However, I'm almost tempted to go 12/6 instead of 15/6. The 12/6 was loud. But the 15/6 isn't that much bigger or costly to build.
