fEARFUL the solution to everything

My only gripe with them is that I have to build one to hear one :D

I think that is the heart of the matter.
It's one thing when someone jumps into every "what speaker" thread and suggests an Ampeg 810. Most of us have owned or borrowed one. Or at least seen them played out live.

The Fearful conundrum is that nobody sells them in a retail outlet like GC. So you have to buy a kit and build one. Or pay a builder to make one. And the ones you pay to get built are not cheap. Not by a longshot.

But the Fearful is the best bass for metal!

I'm just going to be honest; I think 99.9% of bass players could get one of Greenboy's cabs and be at least as happy as with any other cabinet if they gave it a solid month or two of playing before making up their minds.

The vast majority of the stuff on the market is badly designed garbage that focuses on profit margins and aesthetics before functionality and performance. Sorry, that's just the truth (as I see it).

I'm not going to apologize that or give false praise to manufacturers that I feel are taking advantage of players. You're going to get my honest opinion if you ask me for advice about a cabinet, and that's all there is to it.

* That said, I do believe there are a number of designers who do it right other than Dave, and if one of their designs fits the bill I play no favorites.

Do you really shoot for a "PA like" tone?

My basses always sounded a whole lot better in bass cabs than in PA cabs.

What's the appeal of uncolored tone? Tone has to be good, that's it... Overly transparent bass cabs sound cold, uninspired and boring. Best cabs around have a characteristic voice.

this is a major dividing line in the TB community. Some folks want their bass to come out of their amp exactly like it goes in, but louder. Some folks want the amp (and cabinet) to impart color to the tone.
Neither is wrong or right.
Though for me I stopped looking for new speakers when discovered EVM-15 drivers in TL606 boxes.
I really, really like that color.

Is there anyone like me who is tired of hearing about the fEARUL as the solution to every problem?

If the 410 and other conventional speaker design are poor design, I see it as an engineering masterpiece to overcome those problems and still make cabs that sound really good.

Maybe, like many scientific discovery, it is by experiment and mistake that great design are made and maybe it is those flaws that makes a character to a sound and a brand.

There is also a fact that the fEARFUL are not easy to find and try, there are other cabs out there that sound great.

To answer you question, yes. And don't worry about all of the negativity regarding your anti-fearful thread.....just the fanboy's haten'. All I can say is thank "god" this website isn't called Talk Religion. These trivial sorts of squabbles are what religious wars have been fought over......you face west when you pray, I face east....yada yada yada.....you think fearful is the best and all other is inferior garbage......I like my garbage and dont see what the big deal about fearful is. Its funny to me, cause I though your post wasn't trolling, negative, or fight picking. But the fanboy's came out swinging. Had you started a thread along the lines of "fearful's are the greatest cabs in the world".....you would have have gotten zero squabble from anybody. Gotta love the double standard!!

Me, I'm tired of the negativity on TB. People talk to each other on this forum in ways that they would never dare in a face-to-face scenario. I'm tired of the holier-than-thou, self riotous, my **** dont stink attitude some people feel the need to impose on others.....and whats funny is it's based on what kind of gear you play!.....not how good of a player you are, how good of person you are, or how many good deeds you have done in your life....but people feel the need to act like a "richard" solely based on an argument of who's bass gear choice is right, who's is wrong. Seriously.

I have no dog in the fight but this makes sense. Play nice and be respectful of each other. Negatively can actually detract people from here, or even from trying different equipment.

Thank you!! At times, this sort of thing keeps me away from the forums. I'll pop back in from time to time. I remember several years ago I bought a Sadowsky Metro, I hated the bass and posted a thread detailing my thoughts about my Sadowsky experience. I thought the bass sounded horrible, felt horrible, and just didn't see what the hype was all about. My thread wasn't nasty towards Roger, his company, or the people who love his basses.....my thread was solely along the lines of "I dont see what the big deal was all about". OMG, the fanboi's came unglued.....how dare I post something negative about Sadowsky. How dare I not like Sadowsky!!! Same thing here. This sort of nonsense gets old and brings out the worst in some.

I'm not anti fearful, I don't mind people loving their cab, I'm mostly annoyed by people saying everything else is crap.

I'm not negative because I'm not a fanatic. If I were to see this as a religious debate, I'd say we're up against Scientology. But I am a scientist and you can add up two incompatible theorical concept together and make a better one by experiment, as a theorical concept can be crap when put to experiment, that's how science evolve.

Only trying to open mind, I find it also very disrespectful to other engineer out there (who are stand up guys) when their gear is called crap.

Please stop the negativity, fanatic arguments and snob comment and enjoy your gear.

Sadowsky's are just another bass just like the fearful's are just another cabinet. I think it's funny how attached people become to things around here and how quickly trends catch on a die off.

One of the best posts I have ever read. Amen! Its the need to be right and other wrong I guess. I usually read through these posts to try and find the opinions from experienced guys on a piece of gear I haven’t tried and want to read pros and cons but inevitably things flame up for the dumbest reasons by the second page and then they go on for 11 more. But like a bloody car accident I can’t help myself and I keep reading and can’t turn away.
There are a lot of great members with a ton to say that has the most truth. Funny thing they usually stay out of this stuff. For me and for my tastes only I don’t like most of the mainstream gear and fad gear so many seem to love and well it’s probably for good reason they do love it probably because it does exactly what they need and want it to do for the price they are willing to spend and yes I still like to read about it because maybe my needs and ear are changing and I will be looking for something different in the near future. But for today I don’t like super flat clean PA type cabs, or Fender, or Ampeg, 4 string basses, or flatwound strings, or multi effect units, or Sadowsky basses, or micro heads, or micro cabs, or cream in my coffee but who cares anyway? A year from now or maybe less my situation will change and so will my opinion so hearing both sides on a positive level is so cool and the mudslinging sucks.

Sorry but i have to ask, how does one hear the uncoloured tone of their bass? what tone are we talking about? How can you even know what the uncoloured tone is? how is "bass" defined here? Is it the wood? Pickups? Strings? Bridge? A combination of stuff? how do you know if a cab or amp is or is not adding colour? what is the reference point? and why do we call it colour when we cant see it ;) ?

TB is great. I have been on this board for almost a decade. During the last decade, I attribute TB (and the people who post here) for turning me on to all sorts of gear I never would have had the privilege of knowing about had I never been a member here. It has taken me awhile to figure it out, but sometimes the latest and greatest isn't always the greatest. I have spent a great deal of $$ chasing the preverbal golden tone only to realize what I had/have isn't any more inferior or bad sounding than what I just "had to have". FWIW, I sold my Baer ML112's (fearful derived 112 cabs) only to go back to a more traditional sounding ceramic Aguilar DB112. Guess I'll never be a "real" bass player cause my DB112's aren't as superior as the fearful 12/6/1:crying: Oh well'.

On a side note, found this out the hard way too.......I dont want my bass to sound like a studio monitor. I want my rig to sound like a bass rig. Ya, I want a relative flat/not-too-colored rig; but 1st and foremost, I want it to sound like a "bass rig"....not a PA, and not a monitor. Hey, if the fearful designed cabs get you closer to your "tone", more power to you.

Anyone who claims a fearful is superior just get me giggling. They aren't superior if what they do isn't what you want.

I can definitely credit TB for a lot of the knowledge I have and I enjoy browsing the forums and learning. There's a wealth of knowledge. What a lot of new people who come here don't understand is there is a lot of people with no actual understanding spouting off at the mouth with second hand knowledge. I believe the saying is "They know just enough to be dangerous".

Yup, I like putting together a rig that works. I'm not looking to hear only my bass coming through the speakers. I'm looking to get an amplifier and cabinet that compliments my bass and gives me what I want. Whether it's a fearful or an Ampeg 810.
