Fender 2012 basses

I had the same question prior to purchasing the bass and contacted Fender customer support. They responded that the pick-ups in this 2012 model were NOT the custom shop pups but the same pups used in the post 2008-9 updated MIA P basses.

Honestly, these pups sound darn good. I've heard that the newer pups have a more vintage sound and these a more "modern" sound. I haven't played a 2012 P bass with the custom shop pups so I can't provide any personal insight.

I figured, if the pups were an issue for me I would replace them with a set of the custom shop pups (about $65.00 new). So far, I have no desire to do so.

Been playing this bass a lot lately (rehearsing, kind of a slow down for gigs the next few weeks). Still love the feel, the weight. The only complaint is that it sounds like a jazz bass! In a good way. In the best possible way.

I may be a P-bass only guy ... oh, the humanity...

Not on the American Standard series or anything below that, just American Deluxe. Not sure when they started using them on the Am Std series, (2011?) and the website also states better fret work on the Am Std series. I'm on my second Am Std 2012 bass, (5 string jazz) which I just took possession of, and the action and playability is spectacular. I just sold my 2012 PV to a friend, and that bass also played really really well.

Also, the pickups have a more modern edge (not overly bright) and I prefer this to "vintage" tone, as the tone pot does it's job of taking the edge off really well. For a totally passive bass, I feel I have a lot of tones under my fingertips with this bass.

To my knowledge, all Fender's American Standard basses have had the posiflex rods in their necks since the mid 90s - and not just the Deluxe models, as you've stated...

Have a 2012 American Standard P. Olympic White and RW. I will go on record and say that is hands down the best P bass tone I have gotten out of an American Standard P.

Only gripe? I had to adjust the neck a little upon receiving it in the neck pocket and to my eyes, the pocket fit isn't the best. That said, I think the seam between neck and pocket is always more pronounced on a white bodied bass, so now I think I may be seeing something that isn't there just because I had to rectify a little neck shift.

Put it this way, the sound and playability are so good, that I have not found the above to be any issue.

Just about everything in my profile goes on the block in November due to a cross country move to a home with very little room for my collection. All with great prices to TBers so I don't have to mess with the Craigslist and eBay riff raff. PM me in November if you see something in the profile you want and we'll work a good price.

Nice trio; but I really preferred the mint green pickguard on the Sage Green Metallic. It'd be interesting if you posted a thread/poll with pics of her wearing the different guards. Maybe I'm all wet, and everybody else would prefer the black...
