All I can tell you is what I've seen in Dallas. I doubt they are only on clearance in Dallas. Sam Ash was also trying to clear them out for $999.

Fender 60th Anniversary Precision Bass

All I can tell you is what I've seen in Dallas. I doubt they are only on clearance in Dallas. Sam Ash was also trying to clear them out for $999.
Posted a real quick demo vid of my new 60th and you can really sorta see the purple...
= playing through my GB Shuttle Max 12.0, noon on all dials running through a Mesa 2x12 Powehouse cab.

Our records show that this serial number is to a Factory Special Run 60th Anniversary Precision Bass with a Maple neck in 2-Tone Sunburst, completed May of 2011, no records show a model offered in purple

Sounds to me like he answered the main questions: He confirmed that it's a legit serial number, that it was produced in May 2011, and that it isn't supposed to be purple.
So, the only remaining question is how a burst could wind up looking purple where it's supposed to be black. I wonder if this is something that crops up from time to time on other Fender instruments -- or maybe it isn't even specific to Fender. Why don't you start a new thread asking if anyone has ever seen a burst on a bass (especially on a Fender) where the black looks purplish?

You are right. I'll just bring it back to guitar center and get my money back.
Maybe the purple tint has something to do with the thickness of the "thin skin lacquer". I've noticed before when painting that some colors take a few coats to reach their full appearance. Maybe by doing the paint as a thinner coat, the colors under the black add to the appearance of a purple color.
That could absolutely be it. This is the thinnest coat I've ever seen. I'll try to snap a shot of the body in the middle, you can actually see the wood grain bumps.
The finish on mine has definitely sunken in a bit over the last two years. I can see lots of grain peaking through.
On a side note, I've now owned my 60th longer than I've ever owned any bass, and I've been playing since 1981!!

Yeah, me too. I haven't babied it really, and I haven't directly abused it either. Just played a bunch of gigs and rehearsals with it. I even have some finish checking thanks to a cold outdoor gig. It's definitely a player. Any bass that plays and sounds this good deserves to be used.
I should add that not only have I kept this bass longer than any other, I've also modified it MUCH less than any other in my stable.
The ONLY mods I did were shielding and strap locks. Only other mod planned is a Hipshot detuner at some point.
This is without a doubt the bass I will be buried with.

I do see that it is somewhat “purple-ish”, was this bass sitting out on the display floor @ guitar center?

It was in the back. This store only had windows on the door. No exposure that I could see. However I did take off the pick guard to see of it was faded and it's nice and even under the guard and all the way around front and back.
And the he said:
Fluorescent lights are the more likely cause than natural sunlight, fluorescents are brutal on certain finishes... I’m not sure to be quite honest, we definitely didn’t intend for it to look like that if it did come out of the factory this way. You are welcome to have it evaluated by a technician if you feel it is an issue.
